Clutch problems on 2.0L SS/SC
Clutch problems on 2.0L SS/SC
I have a 2005 Cobalt SS 2.0L SS/SC. At 49K miles the Cam chain tensioner failed and hand-grenaded the engine. Thank God for extended warranties. Dealership replaced entire motor and said clutch needed replacing (marginal condition). We paid for New GM Clutch parts (flywheel, pressure plate, disk, etc...). Then starting at 58K miles engine??? starting making similar noise again, rattling noise (sounds like a diesel at idle). In the mean time we had to leave town and son in law was driving the car. A little clutch slipping from inexperience but no abuse. Downshift from 5 to 4 and then released clutch to nothing...Neutral! Towed to dealership and dis-assembly revealed a clutch disk with the trans side blown completely off it (less than 10K miles with 9500 of them by the wife and I). Now inspection for the original engine noise reveals nothing, the noise is completely gone. Dealership says warranty doesn't cover clutch failure because the disk was damaged? Anyone have any ideas or thoughts. No Mods to the car (bone stock). My thought is the noise was obviously not engine and possibly was due to clutch disk failure??? Is it possible that the disk had started to fail (rivet failure or piece of disk broken) and that this just finally failed?

Unfortunately "wear and tear" items are generally not covered by warranties. That includes clutches, brake pads, tires, ect.
So if the clutch burned up in 10K miles, unfortunately I think you're stuck with the bill. Althougth 10K miles is ridiculously quickly to kill a clutch, I think you're going to have a hard time proving that its a defect and not "abuse".

Yeah, Clutches are difficult to prove it was a defect unless it completely ******* detonates and has a catostrophic failure. It is entirely possible for someone to kill a clutch within 10,000 miles. It happens quite often whenever someone constantly rides the clutch, and that is why it, like brakes, is not covered unless the failure happens in such a short period of time (Usually under 500 to 1000 miles).
Try and find some place else. Im lucky i know a friend that did my first clutch for 300. He never did a clutch in a cobalt, but i had the lsj powerbook that shows you step by step how to install one.
