clutchless 5 speed cobalt? wtf?

ok so my mechanic told me if i ever shifted my balt without the clutch so i ask him what do you mean isn't that bad for my sync's and clutch. he said a little bit but it wont hurt to try it once or twice. i use the clutch as normal in getting into first i roll up to about 10-15 mph take it out of gear without clutch and dont you know it goes RIGHT into 2nd without the clutch and no grind or ANY kind of noise. it went in like it was suppose to do it. idk i did it again 2 more times just to see if i was going crazy or not and it was just from 1st to 2nd. it did it nice and smoooth. kinda reminded me of this clutchless mercedes i drove once when i was a valet. pretty weird. idk just want yours guys comments on what damage it can cause if any. i'm saying syncro's... and has anyone ever done it before and whats the slang name for it. powershifting i was told...

rev-matching. at certain points in the rpm range everything lines up right. i once heard it was 3000rpm and 6000 rpm, but i've never tested it myself.

i could be wrong

Agreed. There is no reason to not use your clutch. And never tell your dealer that you have been shifting without your clutch. Sounds kind of like a baited question too.

You can shift without the clutch all day long if you do it right. You MUST rev-match perfect or else you will grind the gear. I do it a lot in traffic when I am rolling along and I need to put it back into 1st with the engine at idle... I just coast and hold pressure on the gate, and itll pop right in when i am at the correct speed. I do it in other gears from time to time as well, basically times where I don't feel like pushing the clutch in haha. If you do it right it is 100% OK to do.

Chris is right as well. It is ok if you do it right. In my opinion its not worth risking any damage.

I was just about to post about this! I saw a video of a guy doing it in his rsx but never really tried it cause i was new to driving manual and was scared to do anything to mess it up. But a couple of weeks ago my uncle came down and he drove my car and was askin me why i used my clutch so much. He told me that he was taught to only use it when to get the car moving then after that it was not really needed. I will try it every now and then but it doesn't go to well cause i haven't really found at what point it will just go in. I know that i can pull it out of gear after i let off the gas no matter what rmp i am at but when i do get it to go in it is usually around 2,200 rmp!

I have done it in my buddy's nissan hardbody. He told me how he revmatched all the time and only used the clutch from a stop and showed me. I felt so out of place...

Yea, if your coasting, you can just tap the gas very fast while putting pressure towards neutral and it will pop right out..

Gotta find the sweet spot to get it to shift into gear or u get a grind...

Seems like the higher the rpm the less grind, for me anyway.

clutchless shifting; if you can do it you know how to drive with the very best. If you cant. You dont.

lolz....that's how I first learned to drive stick....on a 13 speed

Of course, that old barge didn't have synchros at all.....rev matching is a must with or without the clutch, becomes kinda natural after a bit.

On the 'Balt I can do it but it's frustrating because the ecu seems to hang the revs if you don't get the clutch off the top switch. I suspect this is done intentionaly (sp?) for drivability reasons....just makes things smoother in low speed low throttle situations. Makes your shifts take for ever going up, and if you overshoot the revs when downshifting you may as well give up and punch the clutch in.

Side question (not to thread jack)....can this behavior be "tuned" out?

Because I drive a truck during work I am used to not using as clutch. SOmetimes I don't think about it and just do it in my personal cars. The cobalt will do it but you have to be affirmative with it, atleast with the sc. If you try to ginger it in it will grind. With my Honda on the other hand I can up and downshift no problem without the clutch.

aparently going to a lightweight flywheel helps with this.

all shifting without the clutch does is wear out syncros.

I dont think i would risk messing up my syncros just to not push down my clutch for a split second.

up shiftin there is no correct speed to be goin. just go then when you get ready to shift pull a lil pressure on the shifter like you goin to pull it in and when it hits the right rpm it will fall right in. down shiftin you can make it do that at any speed as well. when you go to down shift pull it outta gear rev the engine up some while pullin justa lil bit of pressure on the shifter and it'll fall right in when it gets to the right rpm.

you learn all this when you gotta drive a truck from time to time at work.. lol

My father taught me this in his 1992 silverado. He put 175k on it be4 selling, still with original clutch. My 97 cav 2.2 has 182k on it, also with original clutch. Basically when you aren't in a hurry, you can drive like grandma and shift w/o the clutch . Works well in my 2.4 now also.
