F23 trans differences

New (to me) Cobalt SS owner. It's a dirt track car. 5 speed My question is, is there a way to tell which final drive a transmission has without knowing what it came out of? Besides opening it up. I know they are stamped f23 but is there something else I can look for? From the way the previous owner describes the way the car runs on a 3/8 mile I suspect it may have a HHR trans in it. He was hitting the rev limiter (6500) a good distance from the turns with a very tall race tire in 2nd gear. I ran a cobalt trans in a cavalier on the same track with much shorter tires and didn't hit the rev limiter (6500) till I was going into the turn in 2nd gear. Ideas? Thanks

Thanks for the help guys. It may have been in vain. I contacted the previous owner about some other stuff and asked him if he knew about the transmission. He said "well we put in some gears from another transmission I'll have to ask my brother". He and his brother are 72 and 75 years old. Only quit racing a year ago. Won their last championship in 2014. I hope I last that long. If I find any info I'll share. Thanks
