fixed my shifter issue! (wasnt the roll pin)

so i posted a thread a month or so ago about my shifter being sloppy and pretty notchy.

i had about a inch to an inch and a half of play side to side while i was in gear and shifts just felt plain notchy. my shifter plain felt like poop.

i thought it might be the roll pin, but after close inspection they still looked brand new. plus i couldnt get them out to save my life

soooo i purchased a new stock shifter and installed it about an hour ago. took it for a drive and im very pleased

my shifter feels much tighter and shifts feel less notchy. theyre still notchy but thats most likely because i need to change my transmission fluid. shifting feels so much better and more precise now and all that extra slop is gone!

so if your having any issues with your shifter being sloppy and replacing your roll pin doesnt help, try replacing your whole shifter assembly.

good to know but still doesn't get down to exactly why it starts to feel sloppy, mine feels the same way, to me it feels like too much play in the shifter.

You shouldn't have to change the transmission fluid in the car unless you beat the **** out of it or have over 100k miles.

you shouldnt have to, but sometimes it just helps. when you break the car in sometimes you get a lot of metal shavings floating around in the trans. happens to most cars, plus it cant hurt.

when i had my old 2006 civic SI my shifting started to feel notchy, it started popping out of 3rd gear, and missing 2nd at WOT. changed the trans fluid (at 25K) and all those problems went away for the remainder of the time i owned the car (sold it at around 45K miles)

lol. it helped a lot. this shifter is diffrent than the one that was on my car tho, my ss/tc had a leather wrapped knob and my reverse lockout mechanism was blue instead of white.

alright, the thing i noticed the most when i removed the old shifter, the spring i have circled here in red was worn pretty good. i believe thats why i had so much play side to side and why it felt sloppy.

btw this isnt my picture, borrowed it from mongorat

that could definitely do it, less tension on the spring could cause a loose feeling. makes sense to me

I don't buy this...

many transmssions problems down the road can be prevented by regularly changing the oil... *with the correct stuff*

That was straight from an engineers mouth since I was considering changing mine...said I didn't have to till about 100k unless I was racing it all the time. It's not just generic transmission fluid in there lol.

i would say depending on the climate as well, rissa i do agree with you that really it doesn't need to be changed until atleast 100k.

but there's people like me that are a little excessive with their maintenance

Twm would do little/nothing to fix the spring he circled. I have a twm and mine is still sloppy guessing that I have the same issue.

yup. i was going to say that. you could buy a new shifter and then put the twm into that one. that would help, but only if its side to side play. front to back play would be the roll pin.

Mine got really bad one day kind of out of the blue- and when I tried to shift to 5th there was nothing there. Limped home, assuming roll pins or something.

There is a bracket on the shift cables, mounted to the transmission. A couple bolts were missing and the last one was loose. New bolts/locktite and it was back to feeling like brand new.

Just a heads up.

Might have to do this with my 2006 LS. Having problems getting into 1st gear lately, and there's quite a bit of side to side play.

Not true.

Again, not true.

It is not "generic", by any means, it's a 75W-85 fluid from Castrol. However, there are MUCH better fluids out there.

RedLine MT-90 for one, and by a long shot.

I have a sticky in this section if you care to "learn".

If you beat on your car more than the normal driver or drive it in severe conditions then it is wise to change it at about 50-60k.

Not many people know that in the service/repair manual (not the owners manual) consists of 2 different maintenance schedules. There is one for "normal" driving conditions and one for "severe" driving conditions. If you drive your car like a race car then consider yourself in the "severe" category and do your maintenance more frequently than it says to in your owners manual.
