my third gear just seems to high. It goes, and goes, and goes. I want to know if anyone has swapped for that 4.55 gears, and if so how does it feel?

your car just needs some more mods. AS far as i know the only way you are changing your gears is by going 6 speed and your looking at 5500 to do that

I cant find the site, but GM used 4.55 gears in their modded balt. It was still the 5 speed.

its possibile to swap your final drive, its just a ring/pinion gear set, nothing extreme but still none that i can think of have done it.

that long 3rd gear will win more races for you then loose.

not shifting, and letting the car make power for a longer time in the "peak" zones is always good.

i plan on driveing 420+whp on a stock final drive, it suits a big turbo real nice.

I just want a taller 5th... cruising on the interstate at 3000+RPM just kills the mileage... if we could do 70 turning 2000 RPM we'd get like 40MPG.

i get 45 mpg going 45, at 60 i get 38, and at 80 i get 29, the digital mpg gauge has been proven to be accurate to .2 mpgif working properly. and the cobalt that they race has a shorter final drive for quicker acceleration i think it's 3.55 not 4.55. Why worry about only 1 gear, that would throw other gears off and bog the next if set too short

it was 4.55. Our cars come with 4.10. 3.55 would make the gears even longer than stock????

Yes, the higher the number the lower the gear.

There is a guy on another forum that has looked at installing a 5 speed from an 05 Cavalier. He had the gear break down compairison, I'll see if I can find it and post it up later.

I managed to find what I had seen previously and did some investigation. Unfortunate the comparison in question involves the F35 MU3 in a SS/SC and the F23 M86 which is the current 2.2 and 2.4 manual transmission. The 03-UP cavalier has the same transmission so a conversion is pointless for anybody except a SS/SC owner. It is known however that the transmission mounts between the 2 transmissions are different and would require cutting the F35 mounts out and welding in F23 mounts. From what I can see the F23 M86 has a closer gear set which would keep the 2.0 in its power band and yield a higher 5th gear for better mileage. Here’s the link with some other info https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...avalier+ecotec

I also found F25 M86 which is apparently a 6 speed (don’t know where it’s been hiding) GM PART # 22622126. Checked it at Gm parts direct and it came up a good number but is a Quaife Upgrade F25 to 6 Speed, huh? Why GM has a Quaife Upgrade F25 trans as a part number is beyond me but the ratios look good for road racing. Also the Quaife F35 6 speed conversion looks real good but is really $$$.
