how much power can the 5 speed handle

Along the lines are there any gm junkies that can tell me how much hp the ss s/c engine can handle b/f dying, and what the specs are 4 the clutch and tranny with how much torque they can withstand. I am going to put my ss up to about 300 hp when all is done and I was wondering if I put slicks and a stage 2 clutch in it will the trnny be alright?

The getrag GM 5 speed has been used in applications that have handled well over 400HP, if you want proof, check out the V8 Fieros. Other then that, we don't konw the specific limits of the SS tranny.

With the 86 thru 88 6 cylinder 5 speed transmissions, I have used engines rated at 460+ H.P. (One even had an additional 200 H.P. dual quad carb. NOS system on top of a 460 H.P. 383" Chevy stroker engine) With no failures yet.

So the trans in the SS S/C is a Borg-Warner unit???
If it is, then thats good to hear - because the J-body guys always seem to be having problems with the Getrag and Isuzu units in their cars. The Isuzu's have weak synchros and aren't very strong, whereas the Getrags tend to have problems with gears grinding (probably synthros) and other annoying and costly mechanical issues. Borg-Warner, on the other hand, has a pretty good reputation as far as I've heard

Almost any transmssion can handle a big increase in hp/torque but the question is for how long???
I would suspect that GM does durability tests and likely a stock trans can last over 100,000miles behinda stock engine. Add some power and that would go down.

Yeah but GM doesn't seem to be BSing around with the Cobalt SS. I imagine, depending on the type of clutch, that it could handle power that would exceed the limits of internals - safely.

The Ion and Cobalt have the MU3 / F35 GETRAG. See this webpage for details of specs

The transmission comes from the Saab product line under the destination of F25. This transmission has a LSD from Quaife already available and was adapted to the F35. The F25 also has a 6 speed upgrade, but Quaife indicates this will not directly interchange to the F35.
The F35 has a GVW rating of 5000 lbs. This is extremely high for a transverse transmission. GM perpared the Cobalt and Ion for the Stage 1 and 2 upgrades long ago. The warrantty is good even with the ordering of a LSD in the 06's.
The F35 is a really good transmission. I just hope the syncro's can hold up better than the 282, and 284 GETRAGs did.

I love hearing about what people have done in the real world with real applications, but I'm much more of a specifications kind of guy. Here' is what GM publishes about the MU3.

They say the max input torque is 200 ft/lbs, which is surprising, because the automatic can take more then that, and the SS engine already produces close to that amount. With stage upgrades, the car will certainly produce greater then 200 ft/lbs, and they will still warrenty the powertrain. So thats really interesting to me.

The data is too old for the 282 and 284 to find. Maybe in some old sales documents the info might be there still. I have looked online a few times.
The Diff housing area on this F35 is huge. Well beefed up casing structure.
I just got my LSJ and F35 today. I removed the transmission and took a peek at the clutch and pressure plate. The clutch disk is large and thick for a stock unit. Its still a LUK disk and pressure plate however. They typically produce GM's factory installed stuff. I see the hydualic release bearing must have needed some extra "feel" so they installed a secondary dummy spring plate. The release bearing worked very easy, so surely it is not for helping the release bearing to return to home position.
This disk looks like the typical OEM style, slip it to many times and it will be done..
The flywheel is heavy and thick. I see it is neutral balanced. Thats nice so lighten ones just need equal holes. The flywheel can handle a 9 11/16th disk with modifications. I use this size in the 3800SC engines. McLeod makes a disc in cinder iron that can handle 550HP and is still very streetable.
