L61 powered MONTE CARLO
L61 powered MONTE CARLO
alright guy, here goes. I've decide to swap out the old 4.3l in my 86' monte with my L61 from my 05' cavalier and hads some concerns. we'll start with what I've got so far. I have the motor, harness, and ECM. I ordered the ecotec trans adapter and motor mounts from KEISLER ENGINEERING, and got 2 525cfm electric fans for the cooling.
what I'm woundering about is wiring up my oil pressure gauge, and my tach sense there is no distributer to jump from and I'm planning on using the 87 MC/SS cluster that I already put in the car last year.
for those of you woundering why anyone would do something like this, the car has a lot of sentimental value to me as it was my grandfather's car. he was always a very practical man, and would have rather had a fuel efficient car than a fast one. It has 3.08 gears and a turbo350 trans and was averaging 26mpg. if my math is correct, with the L61 it sould get about 33mpg with that gearing, (YES IT WILL BE A SLUG)
and should yield greater gains when I switch to a TKO/500 next year
I know the L61 is under powered for the car, but I chose it over the LE5 and LSJ for a few reasons. first, is that it uses a mechanical power steering pump, next is that it has a cable actuated throttle. and lastly, I already have one. which makes it a lot more affordable

uh, wow. theres something you dont see everyday. for the tach you would have to buy a tach adapter...autometer makes one. that should help. if you have to, run an aftermarket oil gauge.
at the moment its just a MONTE with no motor until the motor mounts and trans adapter show up, but I'll post pics of all the parts and the car as things progress aswell as a reveiw when its done
Update
GOT A NOTICE THAT I WAS REFUNDED FOR THE MOUNT AND ADAPTER FROM KEISLER, SO I CALLED UP YESTERDAY. THE GUY I SPOKE WITH TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS A MISTAKE, AND THAT THEY ONLY MADE THIS PARTS FOR A PROJECT OF THERES AND ARE NOT OFFERING THEM. SO I ASKED THEM IF THEY COULD HELP ME IN ANYWAY TO MAKE ONE MY SELF, AND THEY PROMPTLY DECLINED, SO I GOT A PICTURE OF IT ONLINE AND I HAVING A BUDDY OF MINE THAT WORKS AT THE MECHINE SHOP THATS GOING TO MAKE ONE FOR ME, SO TILL THEN IM ON HOLD
Doesnt Seem Like It Will Be That Difecult, Ill Just Map Out The Crank Snout And Bolt Holes From The Motor And The Converter Center And Trans Holes On A Peice Or Lexan , Drill Them Out, Then Transfer To A Half Inch Aluminum Plate
started tarring down the motor today. and got a little stuck, anyone know how to get enough slack on the timing chain to get it off? I already removed the tensioner that goes though the side, the front cover, and lossened the cams.
thanks, i'll post pix of the adapter and mounts as soon as i get them from Pat, and test fit them
