MK1 short shifter for IONs...inside
I received my short shifter from the brown truck yesterday. This is the first pic on the internet of it, since the seller doesn't have an official pic of it. Check it out.
this mod along with my ecotec lightweight crank pulley will be going in tomorrow, with help from coppertop (most of you will know him as the guy with the crazy 2000 Saturn SL, split hood, rear X-brace, etc.).
For a pic of the crank pulley, please go to my cardomain page. http://members.cardomain.com/saturnd00ds_ion3 and click on page 3 performance mods.
I will update everyone once the mods are in. Thanks.

Cool mod, I'm sure it will be a nice addition to the Ion
Put up some pics when you get it installed, I don't think I've ever seen any pics of an Ion with a shorty shifter, I'm sure it will be much nicer than the stock unit

this would be good on the LS and LT models but the SS/sc comes with a really short shifter, no need to change it. I just wonder if it really works. Some experiences us Cav owners have experenced it the trany design does not allow for a true short shifter, just a shorter up rod. I say this because the LS and LT model has the same trany the 2000 - 2005 Cav had. decent trany but does not transfer the full power band of the engine.

someone said something about a reverse lockout on the shifters ...seeing you guys are talking about shifters is it true the cobalt has one....ive never had a car or seenor heard of a car with one and it sounds kinda lame does anyone know the deal and is this standard on newer cars

The lockout mechanism on the Cobalt is probably either a pull-up ring or push-down shifter handle. Reason being is that it has a Getrag transmission, and the Germans seem to like this lockout design - almost all German made transmissions/cars are set up this way. The Japanese tend to have the automatic lockout, meaning you can't shift into reverse from 5th gear accidentally and it won't engage at over a certain speed. Theres no mechanism, its all built in to the design - but they are by no means perfect either. Sometimes it won't let you go into reverse, even though you are in neutral at a stop, which can be very annoying.
I don't think either system is necessarily better, it just has more to do with driver preference and what system you are used to. Personally I wouldn't mind the assurance of the manual lockout, that way there is no way it can go into reverse without intentional driver input

Mine doesn't have any kind of lockout. Well I guess you could say it does have one kinda built in, since reverse isn't syncro'ed. But you can't tell as long as you use it correctly.

you'd be supprised on how much different shifters could be, look at hurst, pro 5.0, twm bunch of others they all feel different look different and perform different. some have shorter throws some are better for daily driving and occasional drag racing. they are all different.

No doubt this is a B&M ripoff, however the difference is, that i bought this shifter for $130 U.S. which converts to $165 CDN and that's shipped to my door, whereas here in Canada, they are charging almost $280!!! before taxes for the B&M unit. So even if it is a knockoff, it sure paid off for me, and works just as good. Even you guys in the U.S. would pay $140.00 for the B&M whereas this guy is charging $89.99 on ebay for the same thing. It doesn't iclude the B&M knob, but does anyone really want that anyway?
I do have a pic installed, let me host it first, and I'll show you guys.

Shift throws feel shorter and definitely more precise. This shifter will work for 2.2L cobalts as well, because it origially came with the reverse lockout feature. I am sure it's the same unit as the ecotec cav and sunfire unit from B&M, only sold cheaper through Mookeeh on ebay. Check it out if you have a cobalt 5 speed, I a sure it'll work, but don't quote me on that.

this short shifter that I have will NOT fit a redline or a cobalt SS. There is a seperate short throw shifter coming out for redlines/SS SC from B&M but it's not released yet.
