3.83 works pretty good too. Would still rather a 3.76, which I know they make somewhere. Maybe Saab. Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure that is where.

Stock to M6/3.83 combo (~ change) [speed@7k rpm]

1st: 5.58mph to 7.31mph (+31%) [51.19mph]
2nd: 10.54mph to 10.52mph (-0.2%) [73.67mph]
3rd: 15.99mph to 14.55mph (-9.0%) [101.84mph]
4th: 21.19mph to 19.04mph (-10.1%) [133.25mph]
5th: 26.95mph to 23.89mph (-11.4%) [167.20mph]
6th: N/A to 28.26mph (N/A) [197.85mph]

True. Most ring and pinion shops can fab you up one.

I wonder how hard it would be to install it. Do you have to have those "special tools" that everyone talks about? Or would it be pretty simple thing to do.

If you had a ring and pinion place that makes custom ones fab you one up, they could install it too. I don't know how hard it is on a fwd, but on a rwd you have to pull the pumpkin, drain and open it, swap em out, and put it all back together.

*edit*
Oh yea, requires lots of pounding with rubber mallets and maybe even something with a bit more kick.

I'm going to look into it. I got a guy that I was talking to that is a manual tranny expert and he was telling me that he could make me a bigger ring and pinion. I was more interested in just swapping a f23 in at the time. But that's got a lot of issues with it. This would be a whole lot more simple.

I'd go for the final drive that the time attack cobalt used. 4.45, shouldn't kill gas mileage too much.

Would cut your gears to about 90.7% of their current length or about 24.44mph per 1k rpm in 5th gear.

You are looking at around $3900 for the kit, then $650.00 for the GM parts needing for the install, (items that get damaged and are needed to be replaced when you take it apart)

Then you need to ship the tranny to quaife and pay to ship it back to you.

Estimated total cost for them to do it is about $4700....

When you send the complete tranny, to Quaife, the case must NOT be cracked, and must be in 100% working condition. If they open it up and something is wrong you will have to pay for those parts, and the labor to install them.

The clutch does not go inside the tranny (not in the case) this is something you or a local mechanic would have to do.

That was the very first comment I made to my salesman when I test drove my car... The car needs a longer first gear and another overdrive... It would be worth an extra $500-$900 as an option IMHO...

Someone spoke here about doing a swap to the F40; I wonder how much that would cost just to get that transaxle and how easy/hard it would be to swap in the Cobalt? The gear ratios on the F40 (option MU9) look pretty good; there is a 2.3% or so increase in the first gear factoring in the final drive from the F35, so while it is longer it isn't so different that you'd be likely to loose much acceleration; not sure it would be helpful in controlling wheel spin as much. Here are numbers from GM Powertrain on the transaxles:

Saab F35 (MU3) Saab F40 (MU9)
1: 3.38 3.769
2: 1.76 2.040
3: 1.18 1.365
4: 0.89 1.048
5: 0.70 0.846
6: -.-- 0.707
R: 3.17 3.538
F: 4.05 3.55

This also means that 80 mph at around 3000 rpm becomes 2655 rpm in 6th, which bodes well for hwy fuel mileage. 5th in the F40 gives about 6% more RPM than the F35's 5th gear, so in the end the swap might not gain much except for the more favorable 1st and 2nd ratios. 2nd will spin about 1.6% more in the F40 than in the F35, so combined with the 1st gear difference of 2.3% more spin in the F35 than F40 the 1st to 2nd gear gap might just be better enough to make the whole swap worthwhile.

But... The 3.55 final drive on the F40 is not a limited slip, and I don't know if you could get one in that ratio. So if you have an LSD in your F35, it may not be worthwhile to make the change after all. That is, unless the LSD from the F35 can be adapted to the 3.55 ratio ring gear that is in the F40 while still keeping the limited slip components. But I'm not enough of a transmission expert to even know if that is at all possible. Sure would be fun, though!

The real question is.... How long will it take you to reach those speeds? Higher top speed = slower acceleration in most cases. So what about this tranny? Did they make it so you still have decent acceleration?

[QUOTE=Pyros777;908084]Special thanks to all members who contributed to the original thread on this subject

Quaife 6-Speed Conversion for FGP F35 5-Speed Manual Transmission!

Quaife has recently announced the availability of a 6-speed conversion kit for the 2005+ Cobalt SS Supercharged, ION Redline, and SAAB 9-3 equipped with the 5-Speed GM F35 Transmission!

This post is designed to supply you with as much information regarding said conversion as possible, and will be updated as information changes or becomes available.

Currently available to you in this thread are the following:
  • Gear Ratios for both transmissions
  • Text Readouts from Quaife's own QSpeedCalc, a program that calculates your vehicle's speed, rev drops, etc. when gear ratios, tire sizes, and engine speed are input.
  • Graphs generated by QSpeedCalc

If anyone actually performs this conversion and is graceful enough to make a how-to during the procedure, a link to that persons thread will be added here. (Although I'm not so sure many people will be tearing apart their own transmissions for this... I think. )

Quote from Quaife Site:

Now, on to the specifics:

Cost:
GM F35 6-speed synchromesh, Cobalt SS SC, Ion Redline - $4,195.00 - Link (Price updated 05-20-2007)

QUOTE]

Does the 6speed available in the 03'> Saab 9-3 Aero not fit the Cobalt's??

by all theory it will bolt up, the cobalt clutch will work, the axles will fit. you would need to change the shifter and cables, unsure about what slave cyl and hose you need to use, not 100% sure on mounts. in theory it could be done, but nobody has tried it.

Its because theres no reason, the F40 doesnt offer any benefits over the F35 besides one extra gear ratio. Its heavier, not noteworthily stronger, rare, requires fab to install, known to be inferior to other Getrag boxes.
