Dealers do not use factory tranny fluid. theres no such thing as tranny oil. Cobalts sc trannies are good for 100,000 miles without a tranny fluid change. Just have the dealer check out the status of the fluid on you tranny at about 50,000 miles.

Hey if that's the plan you want to follow be my guest. I'll stick with my far superior RP Max Gear! Also as a side note, some cars actually require motor oil to be used as transmission fluid. My Acura Integra for example loves the Royal Purple 10W-30 in it!

You said there was no such thing as transmission oil, so I politely explained to you some cars require engine oil instead of tranny fluid. Yes, I know we are talking about Cobalts here. I probably have torn my apart more times than you can even fathom, so I think I realize what is going on in this thread. How many times have you had the tranny fluid, clutch, or transmission out of your car? How many times have you done all this work on your as well. I rest my case thank you.

Royal Purple Max Gear 75W-90 FTW!

Since I'm feeling like being an ******* now, there is a such thing as transmission oil!

For that matter I'm not seeing transmission fluid on this bottle either!

GM refers to it as MTF, manual transmission fluid. But it is oil, isn't it? We can let is slide, lol.

Don't be discouraged, please frequent the forums.

If you race regularly, I think there is a rule of thumb as too how many drag strip miles equals a normal mile, try searching for it. If I find it, I will post it up.

Well, I believe GM calls for 100,000 miles on a regular car. If you race it a lot... I would recommend changing it every 25,000 to 50,000 miles. The oil that dumped out of my transmission and all over the track two weeks ago was only 34000 miles old... and it was light black... with a very very very slight red tint. And I beat the **** out of my car.

being I use Royal Purple Synchromax with no problems I think I will try the other stuff. (75w-90) but I have to say when I went to jegs to buy my trans fluid they told me to use synchromax inwhich I have use in many hondas with no problem.... anyway I would recom. changing your trans fluid more than the recom. from gm.... I did my trans fluid sway when I had 15,xxx mile on the car. you wouldn't believe the kind of metal that was coming from the trans. if you do any kind of racing, sport driving I would def. be changing the fluid every 15k or once a year.... just my 2 cents. (can never change to much, but you can def. change to little).

Thats because most Honda manuals use auto tranny fluid.

You are right though that if you do any hard driving you should replace you fluids more often then the really high mileage that GM recommends. Actually, if you change everything a couple thousand miles after new, it will have given all your parts a chance to sheer off the excess metal. Thats pretty much why you had all that metal in your tranny fluid when you changed it. The next time there won't nearly be anything close to that ammount.

one of the reasons they say to change after like 500 miles for motor oil...i wonder why they dont recommend the trans too?

No idea really. But I would wait until I had 1~2k miles on it to change the fluids out, not just 500 miles. Unless you really beat the **** out of it those first 500 miles.

well I did the Royal Purple 75w-90 change from Royal Purple Synchromax. and I HATE IT. The car shifts very hard. almost wants to grind into gear its so hard and it only gets worse when your in higher rpm range. I am most def. changing my fluid back to Royal Purple Synchromax. I talked to some other trans guys at work and they couldn't believe that Royal Purple would recom. 75w-90 in a newer manual trans. Royal Purple Synchromax FTW!!!!!
