Stock clutch sucks *****

yeah um I was loving my new mods till uh the clutch just decided it doesn't like the extra power and won't grab from digs or first gear rolls. Just making this thread for me and anyone else to bitch about the stock clutch, cause any money i woulda spent on a new clutch i just spent on tires and rims for the winter. No freaking way there using a stock clutch on the grandam cup cars this blows .

clutch slips in second too if i go from 40 mph if i start at 30 the power comes on more gradually. JMC007 was right now im paranoid the way the clutch gave out on me it felt like it was done. I really can't afford a new clutch right now.

Exedy makes so many different clutches I wouldn't know which one to choose. And the cavalier cluthces only produce 6% to 11% tourqe increase.......is that good?

what woud a new clutch run about? I hate mine it slips from 1st to 2nd sometimes, and once in a while it will grind like crazy shifting 2nd to 3rd, im sure many others are getting these problems, should I take it to the dealer?

wow....that sucks, i wonder if your SS cobalts have the same clutch as an LS or the like because chevrolet was cheap and cutting corners? But we all have our problems, once in a while i hear of SRT's clutch exploding?

I highly doubt it, because i've driven my brothers base and it feels totaly different (even though that probably doesn't mean anything) What I do think though is that our clutch is just enough for the stock powers. I think it's going to be a bad thing when the GM staged upgrade kits come out because I guarantee you a lot of people will be burning up their clutches and the dealers will say get out of my face when you go in to askt hem to change the clutch. The clutch companies could make some bucks off us Cobalt ss fellows though.

Clutches run from like $300 to almost $600 and installation would be around $300 to $500. I would bring it in, however, the dealer will most likely say it's a "wearable" part and won't warranty it. So you're most likely on your own for the clutch, financially that is.

Two full track days, 3 strip days and 10,000 kms later the clutch feels the same as the day I took it out of the lot. Not sure but maybe it's the driver

same here 8 trips down the strip power shifting, a drive around the twisties with constant engine breaking ... maybe everyone should take it easy for a bit and drive their cars like they want it to last during normal travel ... but even still I have my share of fast driving with power shifting and no complaints yet

The clutch is an upgraded unit compared to the SS 2.4L and lower Cobalt models. You guys must be abusing the sh@t our of your clutches for them to fail so soon! GM wouldn't release staged upgrades to add another 36 HP if the clutch already couldn't handle 205HP! Some of you may need to learn how to drive stick properly!

Those 2 track days were power shifting every chance I got and the 3 strip days totalled about
40 passes so the stock clutch holds up very well as far as I can tell so far

Well first off , I've been driving standards for 25 yrs , My SS/SC Has less than 2000 miles and has never been to the track or abused , The one and only time i did a drag type start the clucth slips when going in to second , would not hold . i have spoke to others with the same deal . So my .02 Cents is the stock clutches suck ..

HA just because you've been driving stick for 25 years doesn't mean you still don't suck at it I kid, I kid. Seriously though, my clutch is fine still after 6200 miles, and that was buying it and not even knowing how to drive a manual car, well I had the basic knowledge but never did it before. Feels so tight! lmao

Not quite, the SS S/C has its own specific clutch, but I don't think its torque rating is much higher than the car's stock output - meaning about 205ft/lbs at the wheels. Its more than fine when the car is stock, but once you start modding and driving the car hard, it can really tax that stock clutch

Like the saying goes, "you wanna play, you gotta pay"

Wow! before any of you start throwing stones about bad drivers do any of you complaining have a pulley up grade? Cause when i was stock **** was fine but now in my case when the god damn clutch can slip From a second gear roll what the hell does that have to do with the driver!? Not really onimirage but mi6_ You really hit a nerve with that comment. Go throw on a smaller pulley than come tell me how much i suck at driving when your clutch takes a dump on you under full load.

It does not matter how they drive it... because I am sure there are a lot of kids 16-17 years old that this is their first manual and the clutch might be fine. No matter how you drive the car there is no reason the clutch shouldn't last 15k-20k miles EASY. There has to be something wrong for them to burn up. Everyone that doesn't take their car in to get this fixed is just bending over for GM. A clutch doesn't wear in 10k miles, especially a stock one with stock power.
