Throw out bearing. LOUD!!!
Throw out bearing. LOUD!!!
ok so as the title says my tob seems to be bad. when my clutch is pressed it makes no noise, but when its not pressed there is a loud rattling. it's been like this for over a year but since the car is so loud i never really heard it until now. so my question is, and yes i'm a newbie to manual trans problems, what is the part number or is it not called the throw out bearing? and is there a simple fix for this? should i replace clutch and other things while getting it fixed? oh, and does a bad tob hurt the car at all? yes i tried the search button with no luck, please help guys.

^not good news for when that day comes. and you got a part number because nobody seems to know what a tob is. they keep asking me is it the clutch bearing or master cylinder.
Its your lucky day! Im also doing my tranny. I had my old tob sitting around. Part number is # 12583857 . Ill also post a pic of the #. But this is for a lsj, don't know if its the same as a lnf.
If you decide to replace the throw out bearing, here are a couple of places that you can get the LNF version from:
2.0 LNF Clutch Bearing - Cylinder 24242805
and
GM Parts Direct: Your direct source for Genuine GM Parts (A little less expensive) You just have to search for 24242805, it won't let me link the search results.
Also, there is a difference between the LSJ and LNF bearing, which is, if I remember correctly, that the LSJ bearing bleeds off pressure where as the LNF bearing does not.
The only downfall of the LNF bearing is that you have a 50/50 chance of getting a good one, even if you go to the dealer.
If it is bad, or going bad, it will lead to premature clutch wear, not disengage fully and eventually fail.
If you are wanting to replace the clutch here is a good kit that CED threw together:
Cobalt LNF Clutch Kit 24239996K
and here is just the clutch by itself:
Ecotec LNF Clutch Kit 24239996
If you or the shop deem the throw out bearing to be OK, I would not change it, no sense in taking the chance of getting a bad one.
If the bearing is in fact bad, good luck, I went through three to find a good one.

so yes when looking up a TOB it is in fact a clutch bearing.
Sanctafied, great info. are you telling me that because my tob is making noise it might not be bad? because if i have to go through 3 of them to get it right i will be broke. my mechanic said the labor for clutch install with tob and everything would be between 600 and 700.

Is there any way that you can upload a clip of the sound you are hearing?
Unfortunately, with the LNF TOB, it is extremely hit or miss, I had two done by the dealer (thank goodness for friends at the dealer that hooked me up) and one done by ZZP which was $400, that's why I mentioned to have the shop check the TOB thoroughly to see if it is good or bad, if it is good then don't touch it, lol.
I would, however, get a TOB along with the clutch pipe just in case you need it, if you don't need it, then you can sell it on here, hang on to it until you do need it, or send it back, unless you get it from GMPartsdirect, they don't like to return special order items.
I believe that John Powell and Tom from CED are working together to find out why the LNF TOB fails so much, but I don't know what their progress is so far, so for now it is what it is unfortunately.
Tob
[QUOTE=Sanctafied;7120046]Generally when a TOB is bad it will be a chirping or high pitched sound, what you are experiencing sounds like it is something else like the pressure plate or the clutch disc, I could be wrong though.
