Transmission Died!!

So my transmission officially went on my car monday night going home from my meeting. The just seemed to not have any gears and i said wtf?! and pulled over and tried to get her to move but she wouldnt. I took the top apart to check the shifter cables but they were both fine. Looks like i am going to need a new tranny!! Ideas anyone? LSD is an option and also new clutch is one.

Yeah, roll pin (most likely) or linkage. You need to check the linkages on the transmission, mine bent there not at the shifter.

That's not a transmission problem, that's a problem with the shifter. Stock or aftermarket?

My Hurst used to do that till we tightened the **** out of the set screw.

Is the set screw tight? Mine did the same thing, would move the cables if you wiggled it back and forth but if you tried to actually put it into gear it would just wobble around.

They don't need to. Get a better grade bolt, replace, pretty much indestructable. Not idiot-proof, but close.

Trust me, check the set screw first. That thing is known to back out on the Hurst shifters, and it causes EXACTLY the conditions you're describing. A roll pin won't cause the shifter itself to spin.

AH, OK. Then yeah, check the roll pin. Even if that's not it, it's not a bad part to have a spare of laying around anyway.

Ahh noobs lol. Shifting is sloppy, so clearly my entire transmission grenaded and has to be completely replaced. HAHA

Happy you figured out it was the most common problem experienced with cobalts.

Actually had a weird problem with mine today, leaning towards a linkage problem though rather than roll pin. Went to put the car in first and there was NOTHING, just like hitting a brick wall. The lowest gear I could grab was 3rd, couldn't push it over to 1st or 2nd. And of course this happens in rush hour traffic at THE most congested intersection during the entire commute. I nursed it to the first pull-off I could get to, played with the cables, nothing helped, played with it a little bit and it started working again. Did it again when I was a few blocks from work. Gonna look at it after work and see if it's anything I can fix easily since I have no tools at all with me.
