Upgrading Axles

Can't we just take our stock axles somewhere and get hardened parts put on? Ive heard of people doing it in other cars and not having to spend $720. Any insight would be helpful.

called a shop today. They said they would do Chromalie (sp?) internals (and spoke in other axle language) for 100$.

Can someone shed light on why i should get the 720$ axles instead of doing this. BTW he says that the work would be warrantied for life.
