It tell you in the drivers manual what it stands for but I can't remember now. It only lets your transmission shift into second gear I'm pretty sure.

"I" stands for intermediate, and "L" stands for low. Basically first and second gear.

I'm thinking they changed it to I and L from 1 and 2 so people would stop thinking they could manually shift their autos. Maybe.

low is for 1st gear
intermediate is for 2nd and 3rd
low is 1st without traction control
intermediate is for hills or something like that
and you could of read the manual rather than ask here and look really stupid
i would tell you what page # but i am to lazy to walk downstairs to my car and look it up

The I stands for Intermediate. It allows the transmission to stay in a certian gear for a longer time or higher RPMs. It also downs shift when going down hills alloying you to use less breaks going down hills. I like useing it in the hills due to the fack that it stays in a gear for a longer time so the tranny doesnt shift as much. Its kinda like a allison trans in the tow haul mode...

"L" is for off-the-line performance. It turns off the Traction Control (TC), engages the low/reverse band to assist the one-way roller assy through first gear, and holds the tranny in 1st gear until redline and shifts into 2nd gear. Once in 2nd gear you should shift up to "I" before hitting redline.

"I" is for "spirited driving. It is full automatic but doesn't allow the tranny to shift into Over Drive. The tranny will upshift at higher engine RPMs and will also downshift on its' own as you decelerate. TC does not get turned off -- if you get wheel spin and TC engages you lose power for a few seconds. You can drive in "I" but you lose MPG because the tranny won't go into OD.

"D" is forget-about-it and just drive. Best for MPG as the tranny will upshift to a higher gear quicker and go into OD for the best MPG.

Knowing what your tranny does is important so that you can use it to your full advantage.

If you want to shift you should have gotten a manual transmission.

When I want to go into 3rd gear i put in 3. when I want to be in 5th gear I put it 5. EASY no alphabet to remember, no algorithms to analyze and keep straight, not wondering if Traction control is on or off.

Sorry, I had to.

That's OK....when I'm sitting in stop-and-go traffic, the kind that inches along for 20-30 feet and then stops again, I just relax and let the brake go and push it again to stop. It's very entertaining to watch the manual owners getting their "exercise" at those times shift into neutral, release clutch, hold brake, shift into first, release brake, ease off clutch...OH S#!#!!!hit brake, stall car....moved 5 feet, car in front slammed brakes on.....God...I miss a manual right now

"I" also increases shift pressure especially from first to second gear

Added some info to clarify:

"L" is for off-the-line performance. It turns off the Traction Control (TC), engages the low/reverse band to assist the one-way roller assy through first gear, and holds the tranny in 1st gear until redline and shifts into 2nd gear automatically. Once in 2nd gear you should shift up to "I" before hitting redline.

"I" is for "spirited driving. It is full automatic but doesn't allow the tranny to shift into Over Drive. shifts 1-2-3 and downshifts 3-2-1 The tranny will upshift at higher engine RPMs and will also downshift on its' own as you decelerate. Shifts from 2nd to 3rd at ~4K RPM with part throttle.

There is a possibility of the tranny going into 3rd gear at redline if you leave it in "L".

I have not done this but I have been PMd by a member who claims his tranny shifts into 3rd with his selector in "L".

Anybody else have this happen when they forgot to shift up to "I" after tranny went into 2nd with selector in "L"?
