Amp for my sub?
Amp for my sub?
I'm trying to power a year 2000 Rockford Fosgate Punch Power DVC, where the coils are dual 4 ohm. I'm looking for a (roughly) 1000watt RMS mono amp. I've been looking at a Alpine MRD-M1005 and a JBL GTO 1201.1 II
Can anyone help me out here?
Thanks....

If you want maximum flexibility for future installations, i'd go for two Sony XM2200GTX's. They're 500 watts RMS (bridged) into 4 ohms, and they run about 100-150 a peice which isn't bad for the power handling. I have two of these amps myself and they are very reliable and i've never had one overheat.
i'm selling a Phoenix Gold Xenon 1200:1 brand new for $400 plus shipping

I went with the JBL, I've had very good luck with JBL stuff, I decided I am going all JBL except my sub (cause i already have it) JBL 6 1/2's components up front, 6x9's in the rear (or maybe more compnents) and A 4 channel JBL Amp for my corners with that JBL 1201.1 for my sub.
best **** on the market, im telling you for what you pay for it, you get an excellent product.... pretty much going to say you will never need to buy another amp ever again...... i have had my 500/1 for 2 years, and had no problems what so ever. plus they have tons of control options, and are just plain powerful...... if there is ever an electrical problem, they automatically shut off, they automatically adjust to what ever ohms the speakers are wired at, and you dont need to run a remote wire to it from the cd player, it automatically turns on when power goes to it....... they are just a good company
lol, 2 years without a problem....I have 2 RF punch 800a2's that put out great power, had them for 6 years now with no problems.....in fact one of my RF amps (a 4 channel) has been running for about 8 years, no problems. (only about 60 watts RMS x 4) but still. I don't find the automatic on as a good point, as I like to put switches to my amps for subs.
How much power is your 500/1 putting out? and at what load? I know I've heard of JL before, so thats a plus. although I do remember when phoenix gold was only into wires... (which means I wouldn't be going with them, as I don't know about there long term quality) Does JL offer compnents for my needs too? I'm looking at doing a all JBL setup (except the sub and headunit) or possibly using a JBL sister company in Infinity for my speakers...
Thanks

jl speakers are amazing as well, i went with alpine components, and i am just as happy, rockford is alright, but i will not buy their amps again, since it decided to catch on fire... jl has some very nice component sets, i have never had my amp tested, but the subs are wired in parrellel at 2 ohms, jl has very good warrenties as well, jl amps are very good, i had a friend driving 4 w0 10 inch subs with nothing more than the 250/1, and it sounded awesome in his eclipse, i also have another friend running 4 w3 12's with a 1000/1, he used to have them in the back of his s10 extended cab till he wrecked it, now he has them in a 99 cavalier, and that is extremely loud. Im not trying to sound like a ********, but i have not seen much of JBL on the market the last few years, they used to have some sick like 18 or 20 something inch subs that i heard once, and they were massive, but honsestly, if you are going to spend the money, i think you would be very happy with jl, also as far as decks go, i have had 3 alpine decks, and i will prolly have 10 more...... the new ones have blue tooth technology, and a ton of options.... you would not need to have a seperate equalizer, plus you can set the whole thing up on their website, like all your different settings, burn it to a cd, and simply pop the cd in and download them. I really like that feature on mine, saves so much time as far as having to sit there and figure out what sounds good.. my next deck is going to be the alpine ivad310, so i can play movies and **** at car shows, plus run navigation, and possible monitering software via laptop to watch all my air/fuels and boost pressure and all that stuff......
No matter what you go with, each component is only going to sound as good as the other components suppoerting it in your system. if you have a great sub and a shitty amp it's not going to sound up to its potential. go with the jbl's you can't go wrong with them. just look at their history, not just in the car audio realm. back to your sub amp, alpine makes decent sturdy product. jl, some are ok. jbl has crown on their side with their amps. crown is the same company that they use on their pro audio stuff for their powered speakers. and trust me crown is not a bad product. if you can afford it, the jbl amps are proibably your best bet.
I've got both my amps, now I need to pick up some speakers, I'm thinking JBL GTI 6 1/2" components for all 4 corners....they will only be getting about 120 RMS each though, you think they will be ok?
Can I ask why? I was thinking one of those inserts for the 6x9" slots to fit a 6 1/2 and it's tweet would be good for the back and I can run all the same speakers...But would a 6 1/2 2 way be better? I could just get a 6x9?
Don't 6 1/2's sound better overall than 6x9's? (I'll be putting in DVD/nav too) so thinking about 5.1 surround...If it won't make a diff I'll save some money with the 6x9's or even a 2way 6 1/2
since you are planning to put a sub in I would say go for the 6x9's. they usually use the same tweeter on the 6x9's that they use on the 6 1/2's.
if you go with a 6 1/2 you'll have to have the speaker port modified to fit the speker. if that isn't done right the 6 1/2 wont have a chance of sounding better. but you are right, the 6 1/2 does sound a little better.

the thing is, if you are looking for a 5.1 system you are going to have to have a center speaker mounted in your dash. and in the rear, since the tweeters are going to be the same reguardless, the sub will act as your lows
I know about the speaker in the center in the front for the 5.1, I can modify the speaker location without a problem for the 6 1/2s, but you'd still suggest I use a 2 way instead of a component?
