Amp Overheating

Yesterday was the first nice day we have had here in MI in a long while. I have had my system installed sense late november and have had no problems. Yesterday tho the temp reached in the 70s and I started to have problem. I was running the system for about 1/2 hr to an hr when the amp over heated to my best guess. At the time of the failure I checked all connection, they were all tight and the amp was still turning on. The amp did feel warm to the touch so i turned it off for about 30 minutes. After it cooled down I turned it back on and everything was fine. My amp is mounted to the back of the rear seat and my question is, is there anything i can do to help keep the amp cool to prevent it from over heating?

What kind of amp do you have?

If they are on your back seat they should be getting enough air to keep cool. Try folding down your seats.

[sarcasm]What you need to do is take a peice of flexible tubing, adapt it to completely cover the Drivers Side underseat vent, and route it back to the amplifier, connecting it directly over the fan input ports on the amp.[/sarcasm]

No, the best thing to do would be to find one of those infrared thermometers (the ones with the laser light) and check the temperature on the amp.

I would assume that if the amp was getting so hot that it was shutting off, that the heat sink would be more than "warm". These things are typically designed to run pretty warm.

I have 2 amps. One is a Dual 2 channel 460 watt that powers my rear 6x9's and then I also have a Sony Explode XM-ZR1252 2 channel 800 watt that powers my 2 sony explode 12" subs. The sony amp is the one that stopped working.

I would assume that too but the amp never turned itself off. It was pretty warm to the touch; about the same as a hot cup of coffee.

The gain is only maybe a 25% of the way up and the radio about 75%

I have used mine everyday for almost 4 months now and this is the first time I have ever had any problems with it

This could be a possibility. I know it is definitely bridged on the amp and the subs are wired in series as far as I know to one jack on the box. I'll have to look up the specs of the subs to see what the ohm rating is on them. They are XS-L120P5A subs that are rated at 4 ohms each
