Cheap audio upgrades for 04 sunfire

Hi Guys ... not really a Cobalt question, but I have an 04 Sunfire that I use as a beater. Base 4 speaker stereo and headunit... absolutely nothing else.

The current stock headunit is dead, and I need to put something else in. While I'm at it, I wouldn't mind upgrading the audio system in general. I do not want anything large/fancy or expensive... just something that sounds "decently" better than the crap 4speaker setup.

Can any of you recommend a good, relatively inexpensive headunit? Maybe one I could order online or on ebay or something? And the same for speakers as well? I would like to avoid adding an amp and subwoofer.... is it possible to get decent sound out of an aftermarket headunit w/o adding an amp? What's more important to spend the money on, the headunit or speakers? What do you recommend?

Thanks. If I have limited cash to spend, is it more important to focus on buying better speakers, or a better headunit? Which will make the most overall difference to sound quality?

x2 on spuns comment.... while you don't have to break the bank to get good sound anytime you go super cheap its going to sound bad. spending say $300 on an awesome deck but $20 on horrible speakers is going to sound bad. and visa versa.

HU wise id look into kenwood. their entry level units are actually pretty nice. the 142 is a sweet one but you can also get last years 208 or 138 as well. mind you these are basic units nothing too fancy but they work well, don't break and are pretty easy to use. you can always upgrade thru the line or look into a different brand but those 3 are my top choices for simple bang for your buck

the 4X6 is a weird size so you don't have too many options there... kicker, mtx, fosgate all make decent ones. 6X9s are a dime a dozen so go out and see what you can get. stay away from the known shitty brands (dual, pyle, boss, power acoustik, roadmaster, dhd ect) and the entry level kenwood/pioneer but other then that just shop around.
