Do i need atenator or battery?!?!

i recently just bought my 2008 cobalt ls i put my system from my last car inside same wires same everything
amps
-american bass sq1200
-Kole audio 960 4channel highs
subs
-2 12' fosgate P2s
2 american bass BEYMAS
2 Fosgate full range 6x9s

Basically at first i had no problems bcuz the car is like brand new but just recently as of a couple days ago if im playing my system for give or take 5-10 mins it will shut off my dashlights and sometimes my headlights i know that my battery isnt holding charge
i just need to know what i need to replace in order to fix this problem wether it being buy a new H.O. alternator or deep cycle battery(yellow top) however you prefer to go about it,
ive had people tell me to replace either or but i feel like if i replace the alternator then i would still have the battery running out of juice to fast and causing the alternator to overwork itself and the battery draining and recharging very quickly isnt very good for it either

But if i replace the battery with a Yellow top or something similar im worried i would run into the battery being too much for the alternator and the battery being to much for the alternator to charge

another option was to just install another battery BUT then wouldnt that cause the alternator to overwork charging 2 batteries? thus shortening the life of my alternator

if it comes down to it and i do in fact have to replace the alternator and battery im going to ditch the subs and just go with mids and highs bcuz thats how the majority or cars are around where i live.

i appreciate anyones help or input so fire away

I think that if you replaced the battery you would be fine.

get your battery tested it could have a dead cell or something in fact go to advanced auto and get both of those tested.

start the car and unhook the negative terminal, if the car dies its your alternator.

If your lights are dimming from your system then get a capacitor, the lights shouldn't drain your battery enough for it to effect anything.

you can get one for under $10 from harbor freight

edit voltage should be 12.5 with the car off and should rise to 13+ when running

our cars are stupid but they tend to start at 14.4 and drop down to 13.8 after 30 seconds

well the thing is the OP has a problem in his car right? his question is flawed because he really doesn't know the problem so until he figures it out any suggestion possible or not is just a bad guess. Now i could be wrong but from looking at his posts and the time frame of them hes probably never looking back at this thread so really ur just talking to whoever posted in the thread not the OP. lastly you cant not hook up a battery to the alternator. If you expect a result negative or positive you have to hook it up to the car which would mean it would be wired to the alternator (directly or indirectly)... if you dont care for the result then just buy some duracells and throw them in the trunk for the same effect at a fraction of the cost.

i meant indirectly.. meaning just positive to the current battery and ground the negative.

in which case it technically is "wired" to the alt....but I'm sure that's what you meant...we've just seen so much dumb **** come through this part of the forums patience is thinner than lindsay lohan after a coke binge.
