i bought a avic-d3 and was told to install it you need a $150 harness to make your car work without the stock receiver, is this true??

 

I'm not sure if you will need it but I know I needed that harness which is called the GMOS-LAN-04 with VSS. I heard the 2006 model cobalts don't need it & 2007's do, but i'm not 100% sure.

 

how much was that one?

and if anyone has installed the avic-d3 themselves, could they tell me how hard it was? and what they did with the antenna and all that stuff

 

that one is the expenisve one for the 07's... you have an 06 so you can get the cheap 15-20 dollar one (assuming you dont have onstar) installing the deck should be the same as anyother one... antenna will probably require an adapter

 

Im jus tryin to find the VSS wire to hook it up. My installer never did that. Does anybody know how to? Is it on the GMOS harness?

 

okay so im new to this car audio business, the expensive harness is the one with the brains in it to tell the car what to do and what sounds to make right? that means that the 06 stock receiver doesnt have those brains in it? but the 07 stock reciever does? thats why i dont need the expensive harness? sorry im trying the understand this all

I actually pulled the entire stereo out to verify that I did not need the stereo to run all the functions. I can't tell you how many times I have been told "you can do it, but you chimes and you user interface won't work." It is completely untrue for the 06. I am not sure why the stereo places all want to sell you the one with the micro processor in it. The base stereo for the cobalt is just that, a base stereo.

 

yeah thats a good way to prove it to people, is there any body who installed an avic d3 themselves because im short of cash and i dont want to pay 200 to install it, or you think its better to leave it to the professionals? it couldnt be that difficult, i just dont know how to link it to the e-brake

 

The unit comes with detailed instructions, the hard part is the speed sensor, but you can call tech support and they should be able to tell you which wire to tap and where it is. It outputs an increasing voltage relative to speed, should be somewhere under the dash coming from the cluster. You have to give it a reverse signal too, power side of reverse light basically. Parking brake is easy, just connect it to the supply voltage to the parking brake.

If anyone has a 2007 Cobalt and needs that new GMOSLAN04 with the VSS wiring on it, I bought an extra one from metra directly, it took 2 months because they were on backorder. It's brand new it works really good and it's simple to install. Retains all your chimes, signals, lets you use your nav properly, and lets you watch movies. PM me if you're interested. your xm can addapt to it. I was the first cobalt to get it installed, i have a thread if you search, you have to buy the xm piece afterwards like all the other things you can add on blue tooth etc.... but yes you can get XM to work with it. I did have to buy the harness as well. Grounding it is simple as hell. I had it installed at a local place but should be able to answer most questions anyone has.

 

Wat you mean lets u use ur nav properly? My installer never hooked up the VSS. Did you find that wire?

And the chimes are so loud now. I cant take it, especially if you dont put ur seatbelt on.

 

now where did you guys put your gps antenna?

 

Mine is near the front right side of my windshield.

PolishPaul, what I meant to say was I had a cheap 30$ harness installed with my avic-d3 instead of the gmoslan04 and I could only listen to music. Couldnt watch movies, use my nav..etc until I got the gmoslan04 in the mail. And you have to take the 2 shunt jumpers out of the module that are on the harness, it turns your chimes and signals down to a low level around how your stock chimes/signals used to sound. If you want me to take a picture of what I'm talking about let me know.

 

If you can take a pic that would be great so i could show my installer. So i guess no one on this site knows how to hook up the vss on an 07 Cobalt.

 

that's not really a how to you just showed that you have XM, could let us know how you installed it.

 

Ok I circled the shunt jumpers for you, those are what you need to take off with a little flathead screwdriver or something. there's a top & bottom one. The top is for your turn signal & the bottom is for your chimes, they come off pretty easy... then you're done! Your chimes & signals will both be more quiet!

2 questions...what the hell is VSS?? (vehicle speed sensor??) and is the gmos-lan-04 for cars with onstar only?? cuz i dont have onstar but i do have the factory pioneer system

 

Yea vss is the speed sensor. The GMOS harness has the option to use onstar if you need it. Its perfect for a head unit with nav cuz it has the vss wire right on it.

 

I didn't get factory xm, added on, no onstar either...
