Help On Truck system Design ideas.
Help On Truck system Design ideas.
I have a 01 ZR2 Truck and am working on planning out my audio install. I already have a small amp powering my 2 Truck bed speakers (Vertically driven storage boxes with Speakers) But I want to add some Bass to it. I am thinking of either a Round Cooler with the sub mounted in the bottom and then bolted into the bed, Or buying a 3rd of the Vertically driven boxes (but without the speaker) and mounting it up front and installing a Sub into the side of it unless anyone can tell me how to find/ build a Under Bed sub box. (I'm making the bed into a tailgating/ camping bed so I'll need to find a blow up mattress for a Short bed (stepside) s10 too)
As for the inside, I think I'm going with a JVC Headunit with Nav. (probably a Double Din Update to the Dash) and then some JBL GTI 6.5" speakers in the doors and the Tweets in the dash. and I would Like to Put a 10" or 12" sub in the actual 3rd door. (Does anyone have pictures of this or know it has been done? I've been looking)
If you can think of any problems I may run into, or any ideas, please let me know.
Thanks.
I will try to update this thread as I get work done on it.
pics of current equipment and install:

the current Blaupunkt Amp is a 2x75 RMS amp, it's used only for the Bed Speakers.
I will need to pick up a Couple Small Amps that have good power, I was thinking of a pair of Alpine PDX 1.1000 for the 2 subs (maybe both JBL GTI's one 12 and one 10 for the cab) and a Alpine PDX 2.150 for the 6.5" components. I need something close to that size to fit in the truck easily.

I'm at work, so no pics of my truck, but I will search up some pics of interiors that are the same, give me a few min.
Here's what I found:

No Black Plastic thing back there on the floor though.

these are what I have to work with basicaly....

Yeah, that was the initial plan, I was going to do a Complete Plexi Box and Amp Rack in the extra Cab space, but I decided I used that area to much. Let me find a pic of the 3rd Door, I want to put a Sealed 10 or 12 in the actual door.

this is the best I can do for the door I want to use.

my brothers got a '00 sonoma, and he too wants some bass. It will be interesting to see where you put the box cause we have no clue where to put it besides in the rear door or take out the suicide seat and put it there... However both would require making a fiberglass box which would be a PITA to make expecially cause i have hardly worked with fiberglass.
most of the bottom of the door is pocket (and its a pretty big one) I was planning on cutting that out, building a frame on the actual door frame, and working that into the plastic cover. There is only 2 small bars near the edge of the door for unlocking it. Nothing else is in there with regards to airbags or anything else.
there is someone that makes the Jumpseat Boxes on the s10forum.com board. there being sold by a vender there and are really nice.
As for the Door, I'll be working on that over the summer most likely, and I am sure it will require some fiberglassing. (and that is not my specialty, but I do have a friend at the shop that can do fiberglass if my attempts are to bad)

lol ud be surprised... that seat belt probably has whats known at an "air bag" to tighten it in the event of a collision. You should be fine but just tread lightly. If u were to put a fiberglass pod in just the pocket you could probably fit a good ten in there. If you do something like how my pods were built it shouldnt be too hard making it finishing it is the hard part
hmm, I know what your talking about, the "locker" for the belt in an accident. I'll have to measure out the current cubby hole and see what that gives me to begin with, maybe I can just close that in, and strengthen it some, and that will give me what I need, otherwise, I don't think it would be too hard to make a fiberglass "pod" that fits the door, and I can finish into the cover...It's nice to hear some ideas on it though. I'll have to take a bunch of pictures (and figure out what I'm going to install in it.)
Emp, what do you think of the Alpine PDX-1.1000 amps and a 10" JBL GTi?

I have a question
Whats under the cup holders in the back, is that whole plastic piece there just for the cup holders?
Its just a thought but if possible take that plastic piece out and build the box in there. If you come up another 6-8 inches and forward about the same that should give you room for a 12" with a slot port, maybey face the port up on the top or do 2 small ones out each side.
Thgis way you don't loose much cabin space and you keep your sub symetric to the rest of the truck. If I remember right the 3rd door has no electronics in it to start with thus no molex to wire through, puting a sub in that area is going to be a pain in the ass to say the least
As much as I hate to say this a sub that requires very little air space would be your best bet, (here comes the painful part) The JL subs ere known for there ability to play well in small spaces, a 10 or 12 w3 (DVC version) would do nice. IMO you should stay away from the JBL subs, there not all there cracked up to be.
As for the amp, its a good amp but for the price you will pay for it there are plenty of better amps out there . Retail price on thatAlpine is around $800, for that money you can get a Audison LRX 1.400 and still stay digital, much better amp IMO

thanks for the suggestions, the Jack is in that plastic box with the cupholders, so Unless I move that, it's a no go there.
I have no problem with shallow mount subs, just initially liked the JBL GTI series (as the rest of the Truck will have the same Series speakers.
As for the Amp, My reasoning for picking it was because of Size, Is the Audison the same size? I'm hoping to hide them somewhere in the truck.
Thanks

i only really remember the 4 channel lrx so i forget the size but you can look it up online
ive only herd good things about the jbl gti but ive never dealt with the speakers personally

This might help you a lot in putting a 12" sub tucked away in the cab.

Yeah, I'm on that forum and the Zr2usa.com forum and have seen that, As I said in the initial post though, I use the jump seat way to much. The Cubby on the 3rd door currently has a beach Blanket in it, and nothing else. So I want to use that.
As for the Amp sizes, Emp, Do you know of any tiny amps? I'd really like to hide them all somewhere out of the way. (there is a little space under the seats and in the Center console, probably just enough for the Alpines. (I would love to go with a Different brand, but these have been the best size to power units I have seen in a long time)
I'm looking for either a pair of 1x1000rms amps (possibly a 2x1000rms would work) and a 2x150rms (or 4x100rms). To power the truck. (I've got a 2x75 RMS for the bed speakers hidden behind the Jump seat already.)
Thanks for the help. I will measure out my cubby whole tomorrow, and see what I have to work with.

look into the arc mini amps. not super big but for a small sealed sub it would be perfect. the bigger of the two is 500w mono block 11 5/8 by 5 1/8 and the 250 2 channel 8 1/4 by 4 5/8
just saw you wanted a 4 chan too. they make a 4 chan in the same chassis as the mono block thats 4X75 @4 and 4X 125 @2

basicly there is enough room for a book (although My kitten figured out how to get under the seat and run around) So about 12 x 12 x 3 for space under both driver and passenger seat. (I should measure to check exactly tomorrow too.)
I'll check into the arc mini's too.

Console Box? Are you good with fiberglass and wood work? Anything is possible with a creative mind.

I have seen some put it in the swinging 3rd door, but you have to be good with glass and have to really support the inside of the door to make it look good.

What is that Console out of? Looks like a full size truck? I don't quite have that space there...
AS for what I have to work with...
The current Cubby hole in the 3rd door is:
5" front to back,
7" across the face of the inside
and 15.5" from bottom to top.
I think I have about 5" of depth and 12" across, with 16" of Height overall in the 3rd door.
Looks like I will be working with a 10" Sub.
I checked out the Arc mini's. Have you worked with the Arc's before? You like them? I haven't had experience with them yet. But the Sizes look nice.
My Under Seat spaces are as follows.
Drivers Seat:
W(Left-Rt)xL(Front-Back)xH
10" x 10" x 3" (I can figet a 11x11x3 if I have to in)
Passenger Seat:
11" x 10" x 2.25" (and might fit a 11x11)
Amps I found that could work:
Alpine PDX's are all 10.25" x 7.75" x 2.5"
A Soundstream STL1.1200D thats 11.25" x 6.5" x 2.25"
and the Arc mini's at 11.6" x 5.15" x 1.7"
The Best fit would be the Alpine so far, but any of them would be alright. (the other 2 would stick out from under the seat about a 1/2 inch in back.
Pics of the areas:
