HIDs and Radio

Ok guys...basically my hids are connected in my 2nd gen projos and when the hids are on, the radio gets static. I thought maybe it was my ground wires, so i checked those and even scraped the paint off where i was grounding and this still doesn't help. Could it be from pulling the power from the boost post in the engine bay?

hmm.....I wouldn't say its because you have the power wire run to your jumper post. I have two HID kits in my car (4 ballasts) and both are hooked up to the jumper post and i have no electrical interference what so ever. If you had a weak ground, i would think that the lights would either flicker or the ballasts wouldn't fire up at all.

I'm leaning towards exposed wiring or a possibly bad case seal on a ballast. Alot of power goes through those ballasts.

My goes static for a split second when they come on and that is it.

I have an aftermarket self powered sub and H/U though.

I have a 6000k kit in mine, I also have a full aftermarket audio system. My HID's are wired to the jumper post as well but I get no static from them. For the ground I used one of the bolts on the top of the struts, you know the one with the sticker that says ground. I just scraped the paint off.
What kind of balast are you using and what rating are your lights (4000k,6000k, ect)
Where did you mount the balast
Are the wires pinched up against the metal at all, check where you went through the frame to get to the headlights .
I would have to agree with the earlier post, you have a short somewhere or a bad balast

Yup, same place i mounted my ballasts. My ground wire is attached to the chassis with a self tapping screw. I cleaned the area of the ground to bare metal before attaching the ground and coated it with battery terminal protector spray to ensure good contact for a long time. Is all this needed? no. Is this your problem? probably not. I'm still leaning towards bad ballast or exposed wires.

haha i'm beginning to think i did. Do ballasts give off radio waves that would interfere with radio signals? I'm thinking maybe i got a pair of low quality ballasts

Terminal "protector" spray actually impedes conductivity so the terminals don't corrode. I've had a car not start because the stuff soaked down between the strap and battery terminal on a slightly loose strap. Something to keep in mind.

means the ground on the cd player is bad... its grounding out thru the antenna causing radio to go bye bye. If u used a harness and did the ground that way i dont see why it would be an issue but reguardless swapping that ground should solve ur issue

???? lol the ground shouldnt be able to go bad or anything but if u walked in the shop thats what i would do. u can always sand a new piece of metal and throw a screw thru it and see if that helps. but i guarantee its an issue with a ground and ur antenna grounding out

did u wanna try regrounding the HIDS first and see if that helps... stock ground for the radio is in the harness. Now that i sorta think about it unless u got a reverse harness i wouldnt mess with it

Now I may be wrong, but I think he is talking about where the HID's are grounded to the car . IMO you shouldn't be tearing that balast apart.
