well you still run into the problem of software raid vs hardware raid. hardware raid isn't extremely mainstream because it is expensive. bit pairing would be the more secure way of doing things for sure, mirroring is kind of just a waste if you ask me.

i've personally always just done JBOD and have just been careful about my backups is all. of all my important stuff that i can never get back i have 3 hard disk backups and 1 DVD backup of them.
