parking brake question

i searched but didn't find exactly the answer i need. i have a jensen uv7i dvd player i just installed, works fine, but i am having trouble with the e-brake wire. instead of hook it up to the e-brake wire i want to bypass that so that passengers can watch movies while i drive. for some reason, my remote for the unit won't work to reprogram it, so i must hook up the wires in a way that the system is tricked into thinking the vehicle is parked. i tried simply grounding the unit but that didn't work. from what i understand, there is a way to wire some switches so that the brake function is bypassed. can anyone give me some instructions on how to wire up said switches?
