Pioneer Avic D3 XM Radio
 

Is there any way to integrate a Pioneer Avic D3 with XM radio? If so, please help. Much appreciated.

Pioneer was a pretty big backer of XM. I don't think your unit will support XM out of the box, but I'm fairly certain there's an add-on kit that'll allow it to support XM.

Once you get that, the next quesiton you might be tempted to ask is how to integrate it with the stock XM antenna already equipped in most Cobalts. That's a much harder question to answer. It can be done, but there's special connectors and adapters needed, and reception quality with it is iffy. Still researching the details myself, actually. I'll be installing a Kenwood DNX-5120 soon and I want to install the XM add-on and use the stock antenna.

Yeah I was looking at best buy's website and they have adapters for XM radio with aftermarket head units. I am also trying to use the stock antenna specifically for a clean look. Although if there is some way to hide an aftermarket antenna then I wouldn't mind that either. Anyway, my question specifically was if it is possible to use the stock antenna.

when i had my aftermarket head unit i used the stock xm antenna and all i did was splice the wires together. i had the same reception as with the stock head unit, there is spots where it craps out but it didn't get any worse.

I'm really close to a guy who works at best buy installing stereo equipment so when I get mine installed I'll see what he recommends. I don't see a problem with using the stock XM antenna

im pretty sure someone on the site did a write up on using the stock antenna. its not plug and play but didnt look too difficult

I'm led to the understanding that if you can get the right plug adaptor, it can be a plug and go job. I think the connector on most antennas is called an SMB connector.

I'd need to get a better look at the GM antenna's cord as well as the connector on the new unit in order to know what kind of connector is needed (SMB male to SMB male...? SMB male to SMB female...? Is an extension needed...? etc.). Once you know that, you can get what you need off ebay pretty easily.

im using the gex-p920xm unit with my 4100dvd deck and the stock xm antenna and yes there is a guide that is plug and play with the 920xm unit

Thanks everyone. I did have to buy the pioneer xm unit and the installer just hooked up xm to the antenna that it came with. However, now that I know this is possible, I will be using the stock antenna. rmorris, can you show me how you ran the IP bus towards the deck?

i ran it on the passenger side under the side panel

I put it behind the carpet then through where the seat bolts down to and then along the passenger floor under the panel.
