Pioneer Ipod adapter

Hey I got a pioneer 4800 head unit and a ipod adapter for it. I was wondering if there was some way to use the ipod while its plugged in. So far all i can do is use the head unit to switch between songs but I cant select songs with it.

I bet it disables the ipod so that you cant screw with it while driving. Thats how my setup is, when the ipod is in, I have to use my headunit to control it
