I guess im the first viewer, honestly, I have no clue. My guess would be that it would most likely be better to mount on windshield but I bet still mounting it on your dash would work.

I think the higher up the better it is or more time you will have to slow down.

When you mount the detector to your windshield, you have a better chance of the cops radar to go through the windshield of the car in front of you. Higher also increases your chances of catching the radar coming over hills w/ the cop at the bottom.

So to answer your question, you can mount a radar detector wherever the hell you want, but you want to mount it where it is most effective, the top of the windshield.

Ok, few bits of info. That pad, yeah, you can use it, just make sure that the detector (RD from now on) can see over your wipers. Windshield mount is better, just because you can adjust it.

As for placement of windshield mounted RDs, there are arguements over which is better, High vs middle vs low. Here is the breakdown though: High mount- Better range for radar, MIGHT pick up scatter from far off laser, might see pick up better through vehicles in front of you. Mid mount- no real reason unless you can't make up your mind. Low mount- Better for laser, slightly less range on radar. Note : Except for maybe picking up scatter, all laser detection tells you is that YOU are the target. Going too fast? At least you know to pull over.

Basically, it helps to know what the police in your area use. And remember, an RD is not a cop detector! Nothing can compensate for not paying attention.

PS: If you want some more info, PM me for a couple of links.

You can place it on your dash.. I just bought a new Passport detector and they say lower is better for Lazer detection and Higher is better for radar so I mounted mine on the windshield and havent had a problem yet

actually, the furthest point forward in the car is optimal for detection. thats why some high-end cars come with the radar detectors in the grille. usually the radar is targeted at the front of the vehicle. i mounted mine on the dash and it works excellent and detects well from 360 degrees. its just a cheap whistler 1745 too. i wouldnt spend big bucks on a detector when there are so many other ways to be caught speeding that dont involve radar/laser use.

I had a cheep one... it worked OK at best but I'm on the highway every day and the new one has a MUCH better range allowing me more time to slow down and it does not pick up all the junk.. I found it to be werth every penny.. IMO

Just remember NOT to mount the Radar in the tinted area near the top of your windshield, this dramatically decreases its performance and laser detection range

Make sure you don't put them too low. If your windshield wipers are in it's view, it can get in the way of detecting the radar.

I have mine mounted on the dash, in the center right next to the windshield and I havent had any problems. the wierd thing is, I leave it on the "highway" setting and it picks cops up like crazy. I have more then enough time to slow down if a cop is taking radar.

Our windshields don't have that tint variant. The entire windshield is tinted (that slight greenish look that it has). As long as there is nothing directly in front of the RD you should be alright.

i have mine mounted here...i hope its not too bad (bottom left corner). I had an issue getting the damn suction cups to stick so I velcro'd it down to my dash.

i think mine is defective or something because I get these random readings all the time with no coppers in sight.

sometimes when I start the car up and the detector comes on it will show a full out Ka reading and then immediately switch to full K reading (while I'm in my damn garage). I don't know what the hell is up...I had so many annoying X band alerts that I just disabled that ****. They don't seem worth the money so far in my experiences...I get maybe 1 reading from every 10 cops I see and I know theres gotta be more cops out there than that with their radars on. This is with a Passport 8500 X50 btw...

If your 8500 X50 is doing that you should call Escort, mine works like a champ. Mounted in the middle of the windshield, under the mirror, BTW

wrong......................................

ok its a known fact that when police are aiming ther radar and lazer they are aiming for you front license plate.. so mounting lower on ur dash is a much better placement.. and i center it in ur car to about where you plate is at....

On the other hand, if your laser alarm goes off, youre fucked anyways, so you might as well maximize your radar, and the half chance that you can get laser scatter, I.E. higher up is better.

These are just my opinions though, I'm not flaming anyone here.

I've got my RD (Escort 8500) in the center pretty low on the windshield. It seems to work just fine. I have plenty of times to slow down if I see a cop. I just have it lower because, I like the way it looks better. I only go like 10 over so, to me, it's about personal preference on where you want the radar. I have mine lower because, IMO it looks real clean.

i have my Escort 8500 x50 in the middle, right below the rear-view mirror
just like this

you also need to remember that the unit needs to be able to see out out the back window for the full 360* protection

It does, its low enough so that the mirror doesnt block the top sensor

yeah I'm pretty sure mine is retarded, the false readings are getting so annoying that I just turn the damn thing off. Back and forth full K and Ka readings as soon as I turn on the car. I bought it from ebay though so I have a 3 year warranty through the seller.

Contact the seller then, get that warranty. I havent ever had that problem. I mean, I get the normal chirps every once in a while, but it doesnt go nuts like you are saying when I turn it on.
Or, you could get your money back (yeah right) and get the 9500i and write a review on it
