Rattle removal techniques

what are some methods used to deaden the rattling due to body panels, trim peices and other things of that nature? i know about using dynamat, but that'll only do so much. what are some other tips and tricks to make a car sound its best?

THE monster rattle in the cobalt as per my experience is the back deck lid. I took the whole piece out which isnt a fun task and dynamated it up. There are other products, just it was on sale at best buy. Almost all of my rattles are gone now. I also dynamatted the tweeter boxes so they wouldn't rattle. Everything is now nice and clean.

The best thing i can tell ya is dont over do your system... honestly, i like the stock system, and i might go with 800 watts, but thats it. also, my rear view mirror used to rattle aswell, so i just put a very small tiny piece of paper between the groves, and it stopped. also a side note. which has noth8ing to do with this thread. * my sun roof button finally fell off.....

YEAH! Mine rattles too! Its so bad sometimes while im driving I will just drive and hold the mirror so it stops rattling... I found that if I had the arm adjusted all the way down and the actual mirror angled so I could see out the back, it bearly rattles now... something you might wanna try! I hear ya on this one! Good luck man! Hope it stops!

I actually noticed the rear view mirror rattling when I stood OUTSIDE the car and my sub was going. But INSIDE the car I can't hear anything. It's kinda weird. When I had my 2 Infinity subs and the stock Pioneer, the rear deck rattled LIKE CRAZY. But with only the Pioneer, you can still rattle it without too much trouble.

On a seperate note, does anyone have some sort of noise from their spoiler? Mine's the normal low-profile spoiler. Not the s/c. There sounds like there's something rattling around IN the spoiler. I notice it when I close it sometimes, and even IN the car while I'm driving over bumpy roads. Crappy GM build quality.

My first noticable exterior rattle was the hood. First car that I've rattled the hood on, quick adjustment of the little rubber screw type things (????) made it stop. Also the passenger rear quarter panel buzzes pretty bad.

Are these cars build quality crappy or is just me? I've had 2 other cars before this. A 93 and an 89. Neither made anywhere near as much noise as this car from random body pieces and things...

and why do you hate to say that? these cars are flippin sweet!

they do rattle a whole bunch though. i've got really bad rattles from the rear decklid, the dashboard against the drivers side a-pillar, my gauge cluster between the plastic trim and the actual gauges, and my license plate rattles to an ungodly level (to the point where its hard to read the plate)

will dynamatting prevent peices that are rattling against eachother from rattling?

Exactly. I do like the car. Do I love it? If it was a stick...probably. But there's just some cheap things about it, and certainly some cheap ways of building them hindered build quality.

Also, if anyone has any rattles from under the car, or the rear of the car, one of the heat shields for the exhaust piping rattles. Mine was alot. Tapping it away from the piping solved that in a matter of seconds.

"Hott".

I don't know which plate it is actually. I had it at the shop today to fix a brake problem and thry tapped this allegid plate in a bit. It's much more noticible upon initial start-up.

This car definately has weird sound distribution. My rear view mirror rattles. I can't hear it inside the car. Standing in front of the car, you can. I had 3 subs in my car. Inside it was amazing. Outside, you couldn't hear anything. My spoiler rattles. You can hear it inside AND outside. My suspension squeaks a bit. You can hear it inside and outside. Weird ass car.

the exhaust heat shield is a common source of rattling

its a sheet metal piece that goes over the exhaust to prevent heat from going into the cabin

the bolts rust through easily, on my last car i removed it
