Alright, so time has come and i finally have $..first for everything..anyways this is what im looking to do...

Amp (JBL GTO 301.1) - Already have
Subs (2 MTX MZS 1004's)
Deck (Pioneer DEH 5800)
Box (probably going to get it sealed, what you think?)
and than of course the other crap...

let em now what you think, if there are any probs you could c with this setup, the only thing im a ltitle hesitant is perhaps the subs might be a little to powerful for the amp, but JBL does underrate there amps...let me know...Ive also been told that the T5510's are the same things as the MZS 1004's, this true?

 

you can't have a speaker that's too much for the amp. unless you wire them wrong

 

I think the subs are single voice coil and 4 ohm, and they want around 150 wRMS. If this is the case than you wire them down to 2 ohms and it is nearly perfect output from the amp for the subs. I think the amp is rated at like 5 watts under but that is so close that it wont matter and if you get an amp that gives you that 5 watts you wont hear the difference.

 

I know, i just meant that perhaps the subs wont sound so great on this amp..

 

Alright so here is what i am pretty sure im going to go with...
2 MTX T5510-04's (SVC) running to my JBL GTO 301.1...i want to run it at 2ohms..is this possible with 2 single voice coil 4ohm subs or should i just get the T5510-44's which are dual 4 ohm voice coil?

Also, i was thinking i might just get 2 JL 10w3 V2's which are dual 2ohm VC's..however there quite a bit more expensive...

The only problem is the JL subs are dual 2 ohm, and i want to produce a 2ohm load at my amp....i dont know everything about OHM loads and what not but have been told that dual VC 2ohm subs cant produce 2 ohm loads.

 

2 single voice coil subs rated at 4 ohms will achieve a 2 ohm load when hooked up in parallel off a mono power source. [ 1/R=1/4 + 1/4 ]

To run the JL subs at 2 ohms hook the subs in parallel and the voice coils in each sub in series. [ 1/R=(1/(2+2))+(1/(2+2)) ]

 

underpowering a sub is just as bad as overpowering one

 

that's only if you're allowing a lot of distortion from an overworked amp or if the amp is WAY too small and isn't moving the sub enough for it to really reverberate

 

No its not. It only is if you're turning the gain on the amp up too far and it starts clipping, ie sending waves resembling square waves into the speaker. When the speaker starts getting square waves, its getting a lot of wattage running through it but the speaker is not moving, so it can't cool itself. It then overheats.

This usually happens by "underpowering" the sub since not enough output is coming out of the small amp to satisfy the listener, so they turn the amp up higher, which sends it into clipping.

 

Go with one JLW7. and a 1000Watt RMS amp.

 

Sorry for resurecting a Dead thread but I have a question.

Can I wire a Dual Voice Coil Sub rated at 4 OHMs each coil in parrallel to 2 OHMs without damaging the sub?

If I understand what you are saying....You have a dual 4 ohm voice coil sub and want to wire the coils in parallel to get it down to 2 ohms. Yes you can do that, but make sure that your amp can handle that low of an ohmage or it will overheat or throw a fault.

Thanks for the info, my amp is a mono amp capable of 2 ohms so I should be all set.

 

why spend 500$ for a sub even if its a JL, the sub is good but it doesnt worth the money for a daily driven car because its too fragile.I think that the set up with the jbl amp is not a bad setup even if the subs gets underpowered because they ll just hit less harder thats it

Just asking cause its a big mix of products, wondering if you would rather go with one brand to get a cleaner look and probably sound.

 

what? i changed my set-up to make it more along the lines of one product...

JBL Amp and JBL Sub, pioneer deck yes but JBL doesnt exactly make em...and i will be getting JBL compoenents as well

 

I had a set of JBL components in my S2K, I really didnt like'em. They sounded great don't get me wrong they just didn't have the tone that I like, they sounded a little too high pitched. Although they were still low pitched there not as "clear and true" sounding like Alpine. I have Memphis 5 1/4's in my car right now with a RF 3002 amp pushing'em there super loud with the top down! JBL subs? I haven't heard JBL subs that sound really good besides all the home audio.

 

Yeah JBL's newer stuff really isnt that great, but you should listen to tehre Power Series subwoofers, really good stuff...anyone else whos heard em should be able to confirm that
