Canada Upgrades

I have a 08 Cobalt Sport with the full Pioneer system but i wanted to hook up other subs to it and i doubt the stock amp with hold up. I got a 1000 watt amp and am looking to hook that up but wanted to keep the stock head unit. Wondering how about to go about it ? Any help would be greatly appreciated

u need to splice in a line out converter to either the rear speakers or the stock sub, i used spliced mine into the stock sub wires and it works fine.

LOC turns speaker wire into RCA outputs for the amp. Splice stock sub and disconnect it

would that keep the stock amp working or no cause we were thinking about taking it out and just using the 1000 watt amp

probably better for the long run to go:

stock reciever -> split them before the stock amp ->AudioControl Matrix(w/line driver and summing) -> Amp(s) -> Subs

This route would allow the user to avoid distortion and noise that comes with most LOC's(though typically unnoticeable), and allow the user to upgrade the stereo in steps.

it's a unit i'm considering buying here soon as well.

you would need to splice the loc after the amp. or just splice rca inline

check around the How-to section, there's a write up for splicing into your rear speakers but i think it also tells you which one for the subs somewhere in all the pages.

okay so we got it in with the LOC but it seems like we have to crank the amp right up in order to get any amount of bass. is there such a thing as like a preamp or anything that would boost the signal

did you tap before or after the amp? if after pull out on of the rcas and see if it gets louder. if so u have one set of wires backwards.

I posted this on another guy installing subs in his car, these guides helped me a lot through the whole install process. Takes all the guess work and prevents messups that are often a pain in the ass to fix/redo.
****MOST IMPORTANT ADVICE**** Make sure you unplug you positive terminal from the battery when working with any kind of electronics like this. I've been a ******* and got lazy in the past when installing a friends system in his car.(he was in a big hurry so I kinda did a rushed job) Anyways, after everything was hooked up and the fuse block was ready to have a fuse in it, I bumped a metal piece of the housing against the amp and poof. Nice big old smoke cloud came out of the amp.... I ended up replacing his amp with one of my old ones, luckily the amp I fried was a real cheapo so the one I gave him ended up working better anyways. Anyways here's my post, and good luck on the install.

When I installed my sub/amp, I used these two guides on how to install/ remove the seats and everything else. Very good write ups with great instructions on what to do.

How-to sub install
https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...ight=subwoofer

How-to upgrade stock sub with original housing
Another great guide, but for replacing the sub in the same housing, very similar to the first guide.
https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...ight=subwoofer

How-to weight reductions(great on how to remove parts in the way)
https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...ight=subwoofer

Good luck!
EDIT: I forgot to add, I wouldn't recommend wiring in a lineout converter to the stock subwoofer line. I tried it in my old cobalt and it caused all sorts of problems, had two converters just plain not work. I think the signal is too strong for most converters, although I eventually was able to get it to work with a PAC lineout converter(one I recommend for LOC's). Splicing the rear speakers isn't too hard to do, just takes a little while. Make sure you either use some real sticky electrical tap so no wires touch and possible fry something. I prefer using a little electrical tape around the two wires connection, and finish it off with shrink wrap around it. Makes a really nice connection and looks very clean. Heres a photo of one of my speakers splicing.

i did go after the amp right of the sub wires. i used this wiring diagram and went positive to positive and negative to negative on both but i will double check them when i get a chance

and when you say pull out on do you mean completely out or just wiggle it around cause i know i was trying to get my brother to turn the stereo down and i pulled an RCA completely out and it pounded like crazy. almost scared me

Are u talking about rcas on the loc or amp? I always figured you couldn't put rcas "backwards" on amps if u know what I mean

And to the guy above me yea when u pull out your rcas with the amp on it thumps for like a split second

pull out completely. If you did that and it pounded like crazy then you have one of the wires backward... out of phase. meaning one channel is getting pos into pos neg into neg, the other is getting pos into neg and neg into pos. So the signal is basically canceling out before. hence why the single rca is louder then both. and when wired correctly both will be twice as loud (also your going to need to readjust just the amp before u break something)

brick is talking about a pop out of the rca when u pull it. If its playing quietly you yank an rca it pos then back to quiet then it isnt an issue with the rcas being out of phase.... but if you yank one rca and it get louder and stays that way then thats the problem
