Thumbs up VXDiag and Software-based Tech2

For any one looking for an awesome code scanner that not only reads normal ECM codes (P codes) but also B, C and U codes, I highly recommend the VXDiag that you can find on Amazon. It’s like a virtual Tech2! I recently had a Service ESC light on and instead of a $125+ dealer visit to read the code, I spent less than that on this tool instead.

It’s a module that plugs into your OBD2 port then has a USB connection to a laptop. They seller provides software and you use Tech2Win (software-based Tech2) to communicate through the module to your various systems. Worked well for what I needed - I was able to read my C0460 5A code and determine that my steering angle sensor was on the fritz. Reviews state it only works with 32-bit WinXP (lol) or Win 7, but it worked perfectly on my Win10 64-bit install on my MacBook Air (boot camp)

In summary, it’s a dirt cheap virtual Tech2 to scan and do anything a dealer can do, I highly recommend it

Got any screen shots/pictures of the device? Hard to verify your story without any proof.

I’ll be happy to add some, even a video, once I get home and use it again. I’d provide links to the device too but not sure if that’s allowed, amazon search for VXDiag GM and it’s the first one.

I also want to add that any programming related task like Radio relearn, crank relearn, Stage 1/2 flashing etc required a subscription to https://www.acdelcotds.com/subscriptions# which lets you purchase a 2 year $40 subscription to be able to utilize the programming capabilities.

My needs did not require this as I just wanted the ability to read any and all body, chassis, ABS and SRS airbag codes. Pics and videos coming tomorrow.

Software that gets installed to use it

Once installed it shows up as a COM Port and a USB Serial Converter

Pretty interesting. Great video. Does it also do a throttle body relearn? If so, that could be a huge seeking point.

My experience with the VXDiag is with a Cruze and Volt. Both of the cars freaked out and did weird things flashing random lights on the dash and center stack when hooked up to VXdiag and produced a ton of U-codes. It was jacking up the CAN bus causing a bunch of issues with CAN messages (leading to the U-codes). The software it comes with is pirated, found in a virtual PC. I tried to make this setup work but it wasn't working out, the GDS software stopped working and then USB drivers had problems.

I returned the VXDiag and bought a used genuine MDI off ebay, works perfect using GM licensed software. I bought the 3-day license for GDS2, but they gave me 30 days so that is awesome.

Thanks! And I guess it can? It should be able to do everything a Tech2 can do. My purpose for purchasing it was to read codes that a normal scanner couldn’t read and it didn’t disappoint. I really can’t answer this question unless someone with Tech2 knowledge chimes in.

Yes I've seen this device sold in other ways, you may have gotten yours from obdii365 or alibaba I saw sales of this VXDiag that comes with weird software. I saw the listing where the software included is a WinXP VM that has the software pre-installed inside, this was not it - this was the software you can install on your own OS (physical or virtual).

you either had a jacked up VXDiag or funky software, mine performed flawlessly. Looks like YMMV but the amazon one ships prime and so it comes with a great return policy. Since this is a Cobalt forum I was posting my experience with the Tech2Win + VCX Nano combo, the included GDS2 did not support the older Cobalt so I can’t speak much of it. Sorry you had a strange experience with it.
