W7 Sub

Can anyone help me out as to what kind of box I would need that would fit in our cars (push in or built it) for a 12 W7..

I just bought one from ebay.. Got a killer dealer.. They retail around my area for $1500 or more.. I picked it up off ebay brand new. Not even out of the box.. For $500

I am putting a stereo system to get slowly as it's not a top priority.. It's just when I see a decend deal I will pick up the equipment.. Cause I next I will be getting a JL 1000/1 Amp to power this sucker.. Hopefully

VBut if someone could help it would be awesome..

when I pick up this monster.. I will post up some pics

yeah, you need it in a cardboard box labelled for delivery to me

Pick up a box made by JL specifically for a 12W7, you wont regret it

Or get the measurements for one of their boxes and build your own.

Ya just have a box built to JLs spec... Preferably sealed if you like sound quality and are willing to sacrifice boom boom.

Are you dead set on JL everything or what ?

I have always like JL... I would like to have an all JL system.. (minus the deck since that dont make any)..

But I mean.. I am not picky.. As long as it works and is a good name.. I don't want a crappy system...

I dont want a $1500 sub.. and some $300 2000watt legacy amp

But I mean.. the thing with all JL is.. Keeping a uniform system

Well the sub is definitely top notch... Cant do much better from a sound quality or sealed enclosure SPL stand point.

I was just curious as far as the Amp... JLs amps are pretty decent and they can do the rated power at any resistance (that its rated for) and at varying voltage supply levels.... BUT for the price there are some options that are equal or better.

For example... My friend has a 96 Chevy 1/2 ton... Hes running a JL 12w7 off of a Memphis Audio MCD1000 and it sounds AWESOME.

Im actually running an MCD1500 at 4ohms (750w RMS) on an MTX 9512-04 and its unbelievable how loud it gets. Clarity isnt very good but that is mostly the fault of the sub.
Its my first time using any Memphis Audio products and so far I am totally impressed.
They look good... work good... sound good. They are definitely not low line equipment.

You probbaly want between 700w-900w RMS for that sub.

Some other amps to look at might be Zapco 1100.1 , MTX TA81001, Soundstream PCA1500D, Hifonics Zeus, Phoenix Gold xenon 1200.1, or maybe even a Cadence z9000...

I personally have friends/know people with the above mentioned Zapco, Soundstream, and Phoenix Gold amps... theyve all had them a very decent amount of time and are all very happy.

The MTX I just suggested because it fell into the power range you need.
Ive heard pretty good things about the Hifonics stuff... Its not as good as it used to be back in the day (I remember when Hifonics>All)... But Ive heard its way decent for the price.
The Cadence amp Ive heard you can get really really cheap online and they can take a TON of abuse.

alright i dont think youll get a jl spec box in our cars my cousin had a 10inch w7 in a jl box and that barly fit in his cavy but best bet is to build on to fit in or build it in the car lol but stay with the 1000\1 tht will give you 1000 watts at most voltages and impedence loads the kicker is only 600 watts rms at 2 ohms and 1200 at 1 and the jl is a 3 ohm sub

That amp does not make enough power. Its probably only going to make 450-500w on a 3 ohm load. Ive never run and dont know anybody that runs kicker amps so I dont have any first hand experience with them. Ive read a few mixed reviews online..... but that doesnt always mean anything.

You can run a W7 off any amp that is 2ohm stable.

JL 1000/1 is a pretty good amp. With definite upsides... 1000w RMS @ many voltages and impedance load.
Downside is that it makes 1000w RMS with a price tag as high as a lot of other amps (of very comparable... some might even argue better quality) with a lot more power.

Do you think that the 500-1 would be underpower it totally.. I mean the optium performance is 750watts.. This one will do 500watts rms... So its a different off 250watts.. But do you think it will still pound really loud and sound good??

Cause the reason I ask.. I might be getting a deal for a 300-4 and 500-1 amps.. That way I can power all my of stuff.. I wanna keep my stuff all JL,.. For show purposes it makes the system clean and all uniform

itll still sound alright
i always say, underpowering a sub is just as harmful as overpowering it (to some extent)
id try to find a better match

altho i had my solobaric (750 rms) power with a kicker amp that was rated at 600w, and it was kickin

500/1 might be underpowering it a little... but it should still sound pretty good. Youll just be pushing the amp to its limits is all. Which isnt always a bad thing... The JL amps can take a pretty decent amount of abuse. If you have the cash and you absolutely have to keep the system all JL just get the 1000/1. You should be pretty happy.

.
what i was saying is the sub itself has an impedance of 3 ohms so you wont get the full 600 watts of power it will be slightly less

and the 500\1 will work fine it will be a little underpowered but the jl subs will still pound i had my w3's serverly under powered and they did fine the w7 shouldnt have a problem with it but im with exhondaman in saying if you can afford the 1000\1 do it you wont regret it

xtant amps are very nice too, you might want to consider using one. my brother uses a 1000 watt rms xtant amp for his 2 w3's and they hammer! :

haha definitely not running 17 volts. I can't even listen to them at 1/2 power at 14.4...I just got an amazing deal on the subs and amp. and then some dumb ass kid traded me a ported glass enlosed box for my $30 pawnshop box because he had much weaker subs.
It was incredible the difference the box made. It takes up my entire trunk but I only keep hockey skates back there anyway.lol
