I suggest not shopping online, its always better to see what your getting up front, but if your comparison shoping then....

Picking a HU all depends on what you want it to do, if you want to run a big system, now or in the future then you will want something with 3 pre-outs, the higher the voltage the better.
The Alpines are good.
I myself have a JVC but IMO the best would be Eclipse, more money for them but more than worth it.

I really really don't want to start something. But... Thats not true. Too high will make it get "louder" faster increasing the chances of clipping. But too low, won't make the system as good as it can be. If you get a higher voltage just be more cautious on setting up your amp.

Point taken.
So what should be said is the higher the voltage the better the deck, but still what you said rings true even to that.

Finding a deck with more than 2 volt pre outs today is a hard task, finding a deck with 3 sets of pre outs that are higher than 2 volts is a chore to say the least. (it is in my neck of the woods anyway).
Alpine has many models that come with 3 pre-outs and most of them run 4 volt , so Alpine is a good choice.
Eclipse, well most of them have 5-8 volt preouts on them so as already posted it might not be the best choice for someone new to car audio. Unless your amps can handle 8 volts, its a waste of money, but there still my favorite.

Panasonic, JVC, and Pioneer all offer 3-4 volt preouts on most of thier higher end stuff, which is still cheaper than the Eclipse, but should run equal with the Alpine.
My advice, go woith Alpine, they have good quality equipment and fairly user friendly. Also stay away from any models that have motorized face plates, just a bunch problems that no one needs. (IMO)

Actually higher voltage from the HU will give you better SQ. High voltage RCA signal are less prone to inducing noise, and with a better signal from the deck you can turn your gain on the amp lower giving you a better signal. Higher gains tend to sound muddy compared to lower gains

Thats interesting. I didn't know about it being better for SQ. But we're thread jacking here.

I have a Panasonic head unit, don't remember the model number. Love it, 'cept for the three line iPod display. Sucks going through hundreds of artists three lines at a time.

Pioneer AVIC-Z2 is probably one of the best, if not the best.

Agreed. Been looking into getting this one. I just dont know if I can justify the price for the internal HDD though. I'll prolly end up with the D3. What else do you like about the Z2, that makes you feel its better?

If you run everything through your Ipod then you have no reason to get a Z2. You can get a D3 for way cheaper and it is pretty much the same thing.
