Some 2.2 Turbo Questions!!!!
hi,
so i just heard of the garrett turbo kit to be released soon and i'm definetly gonna get this as soon as it comes out, however i still have a few questions :
1- i really want to make it just as reliable as any factory car, and i don't wanna get any issues from it so im just gonna keep it al 7psi until i get some serious money to do internals and ****, i heard it could run on stock exhaust and everything else but i still wonder if i should get any supporting mods as once again im not looking at all for issues!
2- Should there be any lag ?
3- i heard a whole bunch of people saying turbo cars were different to drive ( can't make extended trips, can't stay in 5th for hours, can't downshift like stock etc etc etc... ) so i just wanna make sure that i wont blow the **** up of it by driving like an ass. and last but not least :
4- how hard do you guys think it'ill be to install, like easier ( since it is rumored to retain all stock parts) or really hard, as i can't install a single piece myself as i got feets in place of hands i don't wanna go into a 3000$ kit and then 4000$ install for 50 ponies ...
Edit : And how much hp do you think i'll end up makin with an all out setup ( max out everythin )

1. If you run the complete kit on stock as designed, you should be fine with no other changes. If you wish to upgrade later, I HIGHLY suggest you buy a core engine and build in on the bench, then simply swap it out for your stock engine when you are ready. Don't take apart your only engine.
2. Yes, by design. But our smaller engines don't have as much as you might think. It won't bother you.
3. I don't know what you have heard. You should be perfectly able to maintain stock driveability.
4. Its not hard, but it is lengthy and requires and knowledgable person. Pick a good shop, and expect to pay for it.

Not trying to be an ass as you must know much more than me about turbo ( real noob at this but i got enthousiasm and enough $ ) but why does this page says 360hp ???? And supposing im right, would it be possible to get a turbo with less max output ( no more than 300hp) so it would spool even quicker? nothing technical, practical or experience to back me up im just throwing this out and see what happens...

I highly suggest you read The Ultimate ECOTEC Related FAQ.

If you google up some pages on reading compressor maps, you'll understand a little better why that turbo is chosen. It's all about airflow and pressure ratio. Basically, its a good choice for a turbo based on the airflow and desired boost pressure requirements of the 2.2L engine.

If you check out some other forums (j-body.org in particular) they have quite a few members who have turbo 2.2l engines. Gives a good idea of the results of different turbos and most importantly, how much boost the engine can handle before you are changing internals. I don't think any regular members around here other than NJHK have turboed a 2.2.
Edit: responding to a deleted post I guess.

i dont think 200 whp will beat a stock ss/sc since they are putting out more than that to the wheels but maybe stage 2 version of it will be the ticket to compete with the 2.0's
