Lightbulb Turbo FAQ Possible...what should I add?

I was just curious, are there any type of questions and answers that I should add to the Turbo FAQ?

I haven't updated it in a while so I thought I'd ask.

What you guys think?

Yes... please post up turbine efficiency maps and the details behind them. Then focus on how overall system efficiency of a turbo is much less than just reading the compressor efficiency map.

garrett has turbine maps posted at their site. I was all excited when I learned how to read a compressor map, and then looked at the turbine, and it looks so much simpler, but I have no idea what I'm looking at

I'm going to have to read up on reading turbine maps myself...this is going to be a work in progress and probably a week or 2 of gathering info.

Ta da.. you have found the best kept secret in the turbo industry.

Garret only shows one efficiency value (usually peak) and therefore not many people outside the industry get access to these maps.

Garret does an excellent job of describing the compressor side...
http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...o_tech103.html

Now here is a single curve turbine map... FAR from complete..

Take note, there are no speed lines nor mention of efficiency outside of that curve.

This reminds me. I still need to PM you to get your number Adam. I've been busy but still have a lot to learn about these things. Probably more so once we get going on our project. So probably closer to tax return time

yea actually....since there are a lot of threads on it...add a little bit specifically for the cobalt on the turbo kits coming out.

theres a lot of questions on "what do i need to upgrade with my turbo to push X HP?" or "what should i add for my automatic transmission to handle a turbo setup?"

I have actually already answered that question in the FAQ

The second question I didn't really get into, so I'll address it a little.

I have questions about oil pressure and what you used/where you tapped. Also, what pressure you were running your sunfire at

Actually, I can't give you #s because I didn't have a oil pressure gauge hooked up at that time even though I had planned on getting one.

Could you also include stuff that goes for high horsepower applications, like we've been talking about. Converting a returnless fuel system to returned. If you want i can help. I will be doing it, because of the reasons you have stated, it is definitely a needed thing. i want a daily driver, and doing it will make it much safer. I can right a review or you can using pictures that i take or something to that effect.

Sway, if you want to do a write up, I can easily explain the need in the FAQ and link to your write up.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Like I asked above where you tapped for oil. Also would like to add though the reasoning behind where. I've heard there are some places you certainly should not tap due to too much oil pressure. Also what you can do to regulate the pressure.

You may want to get a bit more indepth with the intercooler part. This is a VERY important part of any forced induction setup. You should give a general idea of when an intercooler is needed, because it is not needed in all applications, and address the different types of intercoolers and their efficiency/effects on the system. I see people build/buy turbo kits and use some 2,000 dollar turbo so it flows the best/is most efficient so they can get big power, but they use some shitty intercooler that gives a boost drop of like 1.5psi and is terribly inefficient. I am not sure if you did or didnt, but you should also address how important the wastegate is, just so people know. Buy a shitty turbo, buy a shitty intercooler if you want, but do NOT skimp on the wastegate EVER.

I can't remember how much I addressed into the wastegate.

I'll look more into the intercooler stuff.

yea, it may not really be FAQ stuff, but it's important. People don't research the wastegate enough or get a shitty one, spike and blow their motors even with their kit costing tons of money. and the intercooler thing is just good to know because in certain situations, it may actually be better to go with a smaller intercooler etc. or even in some (this barely ever happens in small displacement engines) with like a 5psi setup you are better off not intercooling at all sometimes. Just some thoughts, not really necessities, but they might be helpful.

I should just put this:

"Which wastegate should I get?"

"Tial...that's it!"

lol yea pretty much. Chinese sweat shop turbo = sure if you want. Chinese sweat shop bov= sure if you want. Chinese sweat shop wastegate= sure if you wanna spike to 25psi on a 6 psi spring and blow your engine.

Just make sure that the one your buying really is a Tial. Theres a lot of fakes. Might not want to E-Bay that one.....

I'd like to know more about air to air, and water to air intercoolers. What the differences are and which is better. Right now the setup I'm running I'm using the stock intake manifold and making an adapter plate for it, so I'd use the stock intercooler
