Borgwarner Turbo Systems & Chevrolet Cobalt Have a Record Setting Year in Sport Compa

<img src="https://www.cobaltss.net/articles/story129948.jpg" align="left" border="0" hspace="5" vspace="5">Asheville, NC December, 2005 -- From their involvement with GM Racing’s Sport Compact program to their work with Brent Rau at OSOFAST Racing, BorgWarner Turbo Systems (BWTS) has been setting records and developing new product configurations with record-setting speed. BorgWarner Turbo Systems advanced its AirWerks program by developing, building and testing custom-hybrid S400SX turbochargers for two record setting race teams.

The S400SX AirWerks turbocharger is a serviceable non-ball bearing turbo that excels with a high-pressure ratio compressor stage utilizing extended-tip technology and a high efficiency turbine stage. This specialized turbo configuration provides ultra-fast response and more than 60 PSI of boost.

“The Aftermarket team of BorgWarner Turbo Systems is dedicated to the advancement of our turbo technology through competitive motorsports,” says Jack Lorimer, Director of the North American Aftermarket. He adds, “Our AirWerks high performance program offers a great opportunity to build on our extensive knowledge of turbocharger aerodynamics.”

“The turbo is an essential component in sport compact drag racing, and having a sponsor with so much expertise in turbo technology is invaluable,” says Carmen Smith, Program Manager for GM Racing. “BorgWarner's in-depth aero knowledge impressed even the most experienced members of our race team, as did the AirWerks hardware that we ran on our Chevy Cobalt race car. The results speak for themselves.

The GM Racing Pro FWD Cobalt is the only front-wheel-drive and the only four-cylinder to surpass 200mph in the quarter mile. The Cobalt ran the quickest and fastest FWD pass ever with 7.292s @ 201.61 at Norwalk Raceway and ended the season with an unheard-of 7.12s run at NHRA Pomona.”

“Thanks to the enthusiasm of the BWTS team and their intense focus on turbocharger aerodynamics, we were able to excel beyond our wildest dreams,” says Brent Rau from OSOFAST Racing. “We outran the 6-cylinder cars with our 4-cylinder car, in a class that is typically dominated by the 6-cylinder teams, thanks to our hard work and the dedication of BWTS. We are looking forward to continuing our relationship into 2006, since they simply have the best turbos, hands down.”

I think it's shaped like that to be more aerodynamic so it's faster. Having a regular cobalt body, the wind would slow it down a bit.

yeah i don't respect drag cars that much, if you can't take it down the street and you spent $XXXk dollars what good is it, but i guess if i was apart of that team i would think different.

Well it's FWD and runs on the Cobalt Ecotec Engine. Of course they have to modify a bit

The hood is extended because they rotated the engine. Take a look.

Actually that is an untrue statement. The motor itself still retains almost 50% of it's original content minus some changes to help it breath easier. The catalog book says that the cobalt that has been up to 1400 HP still retained half it's parts. Amazing for a car of it's caliper.

A 60 psi turbo kit to be put on top of a 60 psi supercharger kit. Twincharged at 60 psi, now that would be a pretty sight to see.

Another sorry step by the General. 60psi boost on a turbo and they give the public a lame supercharger on the Ion and the CobaltSS because it is "the safe thing to do" and cheaper warranty wise. Same old story "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday". Bottom line all they care about is profit. If they really cared about High performance they would have made a turbo the booster on the factory cars. I am sorry to say but those Eaton Blowers are Lame. If they were good why wouldn't they use some kind of mechanical supercharger on the ecotec for racing. The Ecotec is a great engine, designed by a Worldwide team of engineers but the top Execs at GM are truly clueless. They had a winner but now it's just a so and so. full of compromise. Soon they really will be the number 2 Automaker. Sad

Sixty PSI is pretty impressive, even if it isn't street-able.

maybe the engine is out of the car but they deff. rotated it...if you look at the second picture on this post there is a a cut out for the turbo intake side...the turbine goes right up to the front bumper and that engine has to sit that way in order for the turbo to go up to the bumper.
