More cuts at Lordstown

LORDSTOWN, Ohio -- Another round of layoffs at a sprawling General Motors Corp. plant in northeast Ohio could mean revenue will dip about $2.5 million in the village that calls the site home, the mayor said today.

As the auto industry deals with its worst sales slump in 26 years, GM said Monday it is trimming production to one shift at the Lordstown plant that makes the Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5.

The revenue drop would mean road paving and recreation programs may have to be scaled back to save money, said Lordstown Mayor Michael Chaffee. But so far, there are no plans to reduce the village’s 30 full-time workers.

Lordstown Council met Monday to discuss adjusting insurance packages, which will save the village about $115,000 to $120,000 this year. Village workers have accepted a pay freeze.

“We’re still providing very nice coverage to our employees,” Chaffee said.

Lordstown’s long-term future appears secure because GM plans to build its new small car, the Cruze, there in 2010. “As bad as things are, we’re still better than most,” Chaffee said.

GM said Monday it is eliminating the complex’s afternoon shift April 6, laying off 800 workers. Between Feb. 9 and that date, the assembly plant will alternate weekly between using the early day and afternoon shifts.

The new layoffs will leave just one-third of the complex’s hourly workers, or 1,400 people, on the job.

GM announced in November and December that it was laying off 2,000 other Lordstown workers because it was slowing down the speed of the assembly line and eliminating the midnight shift.

The midnight shift was added last August when gasoline prices were spiking and the plant struggled to produce enough cars to meet demand.

A labor contract provides that laid-off workers receive about 85 percent of their regular pay in supplemental benefits from the company and state unemployment insurance.

yes, april 09 pretty much starts the 2010 model year. but if you are waiting until January 2010 to get one, that will be too late. model years always 1 year a head of the actual year.

I am on board also-I know about the 2009 model year and as stated earlier want to be sure that if i can't squeeze a 09' I still have a chance at a 2010 cobalt ss/tc 4 door. And also, i know of no one with the auto option on the cobalt ss/tc 4 door -someone please direct me to images, etc.. Thanks.
