NHTSA Recalls Chevrolet Cobalt

General Motors is recalling over 98,000 vehicles in an effort to upgrade head impact protection. The recall effects 2005 and 2006 models of their Chevrolet Cobalt Sedans. GM officials say they need to upgrade the models that aren't already equipped with the optional roof-mounted side-impact airbags. Owners with concerns can call Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438.

Not to be a Monday morning quarterback, but GM should've made the side airbags standard. Remember when the balt first came out and it got pitiful safety scores because the models tested were with standard features only. The Cobalts with side air bags got great safety reviews. For maybe an extra $200-300 dollars on the sticker price the side bags would've been worth it.

Just a mention - the area their adding extra protection would only potentially effect someone who was NOT wearing their seatbelt . If you had your belt on , your head would never come in contact witht he area in concern .......per GM .

Personally I am going to wait this out,
Probably won't bother either. Looks like they will put some "foam" backed top trim pieces to "absorb" energy(i.e. head smash). Ussually when I bring a vehicle in for recall they ruin something in the process. Once , I had a 2003 S-10 they stuck stickers on my headliner regarding the air bags- IN Mexican ! What good was that to me ? Except now I had stickers on the roof of my truck-Yes , it left marks when I tore them off.I'll wait to see what happens .

Last time they had a recall for my sedan for some wireing harness and I got my car back with pry marks from a small flat head screwdrive on the sides of the dashboard and electrical grease all over the front panel they didn't care to clean. Whats fun about this is the CD player started to:

1. Not eject the cd correctly
2. It'll say ERR
3. It'll say LOCK

And I can't get the freakin thing to do it when I get to the dealer. Unless its going to burn the car to the ground, im not letting anyone touch it agian.

Wow and she almost died!!

so yeah this is my story.. it was thanksgiving night and my car club "Red Camber" were out on our thanksgiving night cruz when we were all racin down the high way and had stop to get something to eat, my girlfriend at the time was pissed at me for drivin like an idiot so she drove with my friend kyle, after we left we continued to race down the high way when a lady in a red neon cut me off, i fished tailed going about 90 m.p.h and hit the median wall head on. i was not wearing my seat belt and MY air bag had saved my life not a scrach on me!! but for some reason my girl friends air bag did not go off. my friend though it could have been the sensors in the car but when it was at the body shop they had found that it was a defect and if my girlffriend and i were not fighting that night and if she didn't drive with my friend kyle she would have gone tho the windshield and would have more than likly died. when i just saw this fourm my mouth dropped. idk it's crazy. but hey i got my cobalt back and i love it, as for the girl friend we ended up breaking up and she's a bitch now so w/e.

You are drunk. In the article, I believe it says they will just add some kind of head impact plastics inside the cars that dont have side airbags.

I called the number and they had no clue what I was talking about and said there was no such recall. All they did is ask me 1000 questions about my car. They didn't believe me about how many miles I have on the car and said that is way to low something must be wrong, and asked another 100 questions about my driving habits. I got pissed and hung up after 20 min of this. I think I must of gotten a hold of the only retard working that night,

I guess people still dont understand the recall. They are NOT installing side airbags on cars that dont have them. They are adding some head impact protective plastic thingies, which you dont need cause you have airbags on the side.

that is normal... there's a sensor in the seat, so if no one is sitting there, the air bag doesn't deploy... if you like under your heat/ac controls, you should see that it says off untill someone sits in it, and then it says on.

Just found out about this today when i went to the dealership for a problem with the driver door latch and inside door handle. The dealer saw this recall an said he would complete it with the door problem when they got all the parts in.
