I really don't think GM will get out of the performance car market . Look at all the positive press they got with the SS/TC, someone at GM must realize the worth of such press in marketing.

GM is under a microscope right now , they are trying to show the government that they will play ball. Once all this pressure is off you can bet that all their high performance people will be back together .

Wow... Car and Driver "best bang for your buck" car and they're going to discontinue it? Makes a whole lotta sense. I bought my SS sedan for two very practical reasons.. 1) It's a $25K TRUE sports car and 2) It CAN get 30mpg on the road.

A TRUE sportscar would be something along the lines of a Corvette, or a Porsche 911, etc.

What we drive are sport sub-compact cars. But with the way the SS/TC drives don't tell it that....

I don't think people read the whole article or followed up on it. GM Performance Division was responsible for taking regular cars in GM's line and then hopping them up.

Corvette is a completely different division. This won't effect cars like the G8 or Camaro SS (although it's not clear how Pontiac is going to be folded into GM as a specialty brand).

It's very disappointing to me as well. However it makes sense, it takes a hell of a lot of engineering to take a Cobalt and make it into an SS. The Cobalt is still the bread and butter, and no matter what you read in Magazines, Cobalts were among the best selling of all cars in their class until October of 08 which was before the crazy price slashing started.

they still have the sky and vue redline packages, those aren't dead until saturn is, but new ones are unlikely to show up.

I am an American, I dont own an American car! My John Deere tractor was made here, except the engine, yanmar Diesel is Jap.

For the money, most American cars are a joke IMHO. GM has a few cars that are very nice, the SS Cobalt/G5 GT, G8, Corvette, new CTS and a few others, but the majority are way overpriced for what you get. I am all for supporting our country, but I wont sacrifice the quality of my vehicle to do it. Chrysler could'nt **** a nice car if they had too. Thought the Challenger changed this, but after the auto show, its crap too. Ford has some good ideas, but for the most part nothing stands out. Il never understand why we didnt get the updated volvo based focus, instead of the ugly POS we STILL have today.

Some one here is a dumb ass, and says "Im goin to buy a VW!" Well, keep that to your self. I own an Audi, Parents both have VW, had SAAB before GM fucked them up, hooray for the swedish goverment picking them up!!! (VW subject)- The quallity there is so much better, and they are in a crunch, but they used their heads, and arent in huge trouble. There is a reason EVERY car mag said the Cobalt SSTC is great, but its still a cobalt. IE, lame interior quality. GTI is slower, but makes up in other places, MS3 is even nicer... They also say its not good looking, I disagree on that, a quite nice looking car really in SS form! But... the people who say non american cars suck, well, you sirs can **** off. You do know that the gov has import taxes right? And that half of these "forgien cars" are built in the states, like half of your "American cars" are made in mexico. Most say it because they are "all american!!!!!!!!!"

And to you, ghewly, and anyone who agrees with them... People buying non american cars is NOT the reason the 3 big companys are failing. People were buying euro and Jap cars in the 80s and 90s too. Its because of years of mis-management, huge Bonuses, poor products, good retirement programs(not really a bad thing), and the final blow is this not so good economy we are in right now. Its finally come back to get em, but no one wants to point the fingers where they need to be pointed. How long have we known about this economic status?? And GM is just now taking large actions?? WTF!!

Well, good day too all, and bit*h all you like. The truth hurts, yes I know, everyone does. But go ahead, try... :Flame-suit on:

I agree with most of what you said but I'll add that the only thing the auto companies have to do to get out of this situation is downsize. There aren't as many people buying new cars as there were 10-20 years ago. When the Baby Boomer generation retired they had money to buy expensive new cars, they have their cars now and the rest of us can't afford to buy new all the time with the economy the way it is. I also agree that most American cars are **** for the money, but I think GM does the best job of giving you the most car for your money, particularly in the Chevy line up. I hope GM makes it through this... America's economy will still go to **** if the Big 3 fall, no way around it.

I also can agree with this.
But i will add, that GM had an awful streak of very many crappy vehicles. Until around 2004/5 when they realized what was happening and started to crank up the quality.
Especially in the new vehicles, the new Camaro for example, no other GM product has the same quality as GM is doing with this car.

Agree 100% guess I skipped the down sizing part. Sucks though, I know people who lost jobs from both Ford and GM.

Same to you captain.

Which BTW I saw a new Camaro today, dark red with black stripes. That looks damn good, and about half the size of a challenger

Indeed it is. And faster, more sleek, and quicker through corners too! Not to mention looks better, has better refinement and technology!
