I recently bought a used 2006 cobalt ss and from what the seller says and what I can see he put stage 2 zz performance package on it which includes injectors, a smaller pulley and a couple other things. He also got it tuned and got a straight pipe with LT headers and a cold air intake on the SC but that’s just to give you guys some insight.
It was fine when I bought it l, it had check engine light and abs light on but I got codes checked and it said 02 and another sensor I forgot what, but recently it started dumping out white smoke out my exhaust and this is also after I put new coolant in. (The reservoir was empty for the first 3 days I bought it, but temp was fine) as soon as I put new coolant in, it did this. It also sputters in first gear now and a BUNCH of white smoke comes out. It’s also is tuned for E93 but I don’t know if any of this makes a difference.
I’m stuck because I don’t know if the white smoke coming out is the 02 sensor not regulating things so maybe now I’m running rich? or if it’s a head gasket issue burning off the new coolant. I was wondering if anyone knew anything and could help.
Don't keep adding coolant to the intercooler reservoir if that's where you're adding it, it's the small filler neck in front of the supercharger. If that was the case then you probably have a leak in the manifold from the Laminova cores or their O rings. You risk hydro-locking your engine if the leak gets worse or fills the manifold when not running.
I filled up the reservoir not that filler neck I didn’t see it, but as far as what to do next goes I was going to replace the head gasket and belts what do you suggest I do since you think it’s a manifold leak
Edit: I looked and I don’t have a filler neck in front of my S/C... I got a 3 way pipe with the top going to an added coolant reservoir. My friend has a stock SC SS and doesn’t have the reservoir that I do
If you're putting coolant in that added tank that goes to the 3 way then there's a leak from the manifold. Drain the IC system and pull the IC pump fuse and see if the problem is reduced or eliminated but be advised that there may be residual coolant pooled in the manifold. You could pull the manifold and see if there's evidence of coolant or leaks if you want to tear into it.
If you are adding coolant to the engine coolant tank likely on the driver's side then there is a problem with the engine, possibly the head gasket. In this case there's a bit of troubleshooting involved, if you end up pulling the head check both the block and head for anomalies and make decisions from there.
If the manifold is leaking then its either the aluminum Laminova cores are corroded or the o rings on the ends of the cores not sealing properly, the gasket for the endplate would leak externally. LSJ's have a water to air IC system, LNF's have an air to air IC system. There's info on here about how to disassemble the manifold and clean the cores if you go that route, you could probably find similar o rings at a hardware store. This might help for the disassembly process https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/how-...rnator-274630/
Looks like you have an Option B setup, and possibly a dual pass end-plate. That T fitting is usually a good sign of this because it replaces your factory filler neck. If you have a reservoir tank on the passenger side of the car then that's more evidence to support the previous statement. The driver's side reservoir should contain coolant for the cooling system such as your radiator. The heat exchanging system and coolant (radiator) systems are separate from one another and have to be taken care of independently.
You should have coolant in the h/e system reservoir (passenger side) at all times, I do believe, as it also acts as as overflow/expansion tank that will self bleed the system. You should probably check to see if you have coolant in your manifold, as stated, because if you filled it up and now that tank is empty... well.. I don't think these cars came with a pee bladder. Hope this helps.
I also bought a 07 sc ran real good for 4-6 months then it started smoking like that when I was driving to work one day so I figured I could go 1 more day but half way there it was smoking so bad it looked like I was resting my tires at all times took it home and got plugs and bought zzp ignition coils thinking it would fix it but didn't it eventually started and I'm not positive but think the timing is out a degree or broke ring have you done a compression test and leak down yet im throwing low electrical codes, random misfire, generator L terminal circuit, and control module throttle position system performance any idea why all those codes and witch one i should work on first
