2.4L Auto on Snow & Ice!!!
I took my 2007 Cobalt SS 2.4L Auto Coupe out for a "trial run" on snow and ice packed rural neighborhood streets this morning. The tires are stock P-6 all seasons. With anything but the lightest press on the "go pedal", the traction control kicked in keeping the car moving but in the direction the steering wheel was heading. Hard braking at 30 MPH resulted in ABS controlled stops. This car is better on packed snow / ice than any 2 wheel rear drive car or truck I've owned. Its much better than my '85 Z-24 which was a "pig on ice".
I've got 45 years of driving experience... 44 winters in northern hemispheres driving cars and light trucks (rode motorcycles to work several winters) on snow and ice. I've cut a few "doughnuts" and have been in a few ditches, no winter accidents though!
I'd be interested in reading comments of other 2.4 Automatic owner's winter driving experiences.

Got some steelies and Michelien X-Ice tires on the SS and I have to say the traction is amazing. Combine that with the traction control and it's really quite good.
I heard the Pirelli's were horrible.

I disabled both ABS and Traction Control though.
all seasons will do the job ok.
but if thats the best winter driving youve experienced so far,
you should go buy some actual winter tires.
youll be stunned.
In my opinion, the cheapest winter tire you can buy, will do better in ice and snow, than the most expensive all-season available.
