2.79 pulley/stage 2

So i was browsing online and came across this and wanted to see if anyone new what was up. These guys at cobalt addiction are saying its cool to put a 2.79 pulley on astage 2 reflash system......

Hear is a link to the pulley > http://cobalt-addiction.com/products/pages/pulleys.html

Is this cool or no ? Im not looking to pop my motor with my stage 2. There saying that the stage 2 is so rick, that with this pulley will bring it into the correct AFR. I thought it was cool that they put the 77.9 MM engraved on the face making it look like the stock 3. Im guessing for warrenty purposes.... neat idea....

let me know what you guys think, and if anyone is running it with no probs.

I would do this at your own risk. There are people who are running 2.8 pulleys on the stage 2 tune and doing ok, but there are quite a few that have blown their motors as well. I think there is enough info out there showing that this is a bad idea and that you really shouldn't go any smaller then a 2.9 without getting larger injectors.

that what im thinking as well. I think im just going to go stage 3 pulley like you did. Any problems there ? I like you set up and it has been what everyone on here is saying to do.

stage 2 w/ stage 3 pulley
dual pass cooler
aem intake
gmpp exhuast.

Thats what i think ill start with

With you set up what psi are you seeing ? Any idea of hp ? 1/4 miles times ? Can you fell the difference with the stage 3 pulley to the stage 2 pulley ?

It has been speculated that it is unsafe and even somewhat proven through hptuners (Not even sure if thats being calculated correctly) but I have not heard of anybody ever blowing their motor with a 2.8 - maybe I'm wrong....

To be safe I would go with no lower than a 2.85" though

you're risking alot to go slightly faster.. it will blow on you eventually..
maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow... but on a nice hot day when you race someone... BOOM! then you'll be crying to us about it.

spend money on exhaust first. then worry about boost later.

nobody has blown their motor with the 2.8+stage 2 setup.

but it has been proven to have unsafe Injector Duty Cycles above 6500rpm.

What's the actual pully size for a Stage 3? The Stage 2 pully is 77.9mm or 3" pully. So what is the 76mm Stage 3 pully? Are we only talking 1.9 mm here. Is it really that much of a difference?

Its 90+ all the time down here, and I have had my 2.8 for a long time on this setup, without any cooling mods. Car runs great, very rich, but great. Its more a matter of losing power due to overworking the GM tune with too small of a pulley. I have never seen anyone blow up on a 2.8 or a GM tune that I remember.

Yeah, not much at all. It goes from 3.07" to 2.98" i think.

Wow that does relate to much of a difference. Hmmm! I'm at a loss here. I would love to change my pully, but I'm not looking to get into changing to 60 lb injectors and a custom tune right now. I think I'll just get the GMPP header and a down pipe for now and mess with this pully thing later.

i believe that equates to about 16-16.5 lbs of boost. compared to 15.

I think its like 8hp, 12ft/lbs of torque.

quoting from a hazy memory on that one...

Yeah, the stage 3 pulley is about 16 psi or so. The stage 3 pulley is safe on the stage 2 setup - GM has said there is no problem with this. nbherst is the one who can make you a custom pulley if you want - and at a good price. I have been considering having him make me a 2.90 pulley.

With each mod I did, I did notice some power gains (except the dual pass which isn't a power adding mod). Going to stage 2 was the biggest then the exhaust made the next biggest difference. When I went to the stage 3 pulley I didn't expect to get much gains because I knew it would only be about a 5 HP and 8 TQ difference from the stage 2 pulley.

search. tons of people are running smaller pullies on the stage 2 flash. i run a 2.9 always and a 2.7 when at the track. i throw lean code when sitting in traffic all the time. even with the 2.9 a/f isn't lean so i dunno wtf the computer is thinking

With recent posts, it seems that the 42lb'ers are unsafe at those RPMs with just the S2 pulley. Its a crap shoot. For everyone that has info saying its safe, someone else has info saying its not.

Question on your dual pass:

You did the option B setup, where did you get the second resivior from? Do you have the part #?

I just used the cobalt surge tank from crateenginedepot (i believe it is actually the redline surge tank). Here is the link to the item. The part number is 10368831.
