2006 Eclipse vs 2005 SS/SC
2006 Eclipse vs 2005 SS/SC
I own a 2005 Cobalt SS/SC and I am very happy with the car. It's a blast to drive.
Previously, I test drove a few cars. One car that really stood out in my mind was the Eclipse GT (V6). It just seemed extremely quick and powerful.
The cobalt feels different, it's calm and well-behaved at low RPMS, but turns into a little monster past 4000 RPMs. So, is it the low-end torque in the elicpse that made it "feel" faster than the SS/SC? It pushes you back in the seat, the front lifts a bit and off you go! So, am I right to assume that the SS/SC relies on HP more than torque for speed and power?
Of course, I test drove the Eclipse GT first, and that can have a lasting impression. I only wish I had test drove an RSX-S, to see the difference between all three cars.
I believe there is a saying that you buy HP, but you feel torque? Does anybody wish to comment on this.
I googled the saying and got this:

heh, i miss the torque that left when my rsx was born...i sometimes look under the hood to see if it fell asleep
but the motor in my car as VERY alive once awake. i plan on test driving a cobalt soon though as im thinking about trading up.
oh yeah, the v6 eclipse is alot higher rated than the cobalt so you should definately feel a difference

It could have been the car. Mine sets me in the seat more than my mom's '03 Monte Carlo SS.
Form what I have heard the new Eclipse is kinda heavy on handling, but if you want 1/4 miles than probably the Eclipse.
I'm really happy with my SS S/C, it's a real blast to drive. Plus it cost less.
Either way both are cool cars. I would try the Eclipse GT and the SS S/C back to back, just to be sure. Happy driving.
P.S. Also look into insurance for both of them.

It was also a 6-speed, so the gearing is also a factor. Nice car, but they don't call it "Mitsu-fee-me" for nothing. Sticker was reasonable ($36,000) but they added another $4000 in fees and wanted to charge me 7% interest. I laughed and told them that I needed to go to the Infiniti dealership to price shop it with a new G35.

$36,000 + $4000 + 7% = Huge frickin' rip-off!
And we don't have the GTO in Canada.
i think that if cobra's were still in production, it would be a tough choice between the GTO and the snake (they cost about the same). I would take the snake though, cuz SVT kicks ass, and because the engine is hand built with a nearly indestructible bottom end.

I know you were talkin' canadian... your $36,000 + $4000 + 7% = $42,800
.. that equals $36,596.83
... I didn't know that there were no GTO's in Canada$36,596.83 for an Eclipse

Deprived, yes. I guess I'm just going to have to save up for a new Corvette to fill that hole in my life.

How about the Cadillac XLR.. That's a hot car!! Over the summer this guy pulled up next to me and the thing was LOUD as hell. and he took off.. Car sounded awesome as he passed me
Terminator Cobra's trap anywhere from 110-112 bone stock. LS2 GTO's are around 106
Cobra's stomp on the LS2 GTO's.

Okay maybe a lot of people like the new eclipse, but I think it's a horrible value. First off, its 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are both about 2 tenths of a second faster than a SS/SC. In other words, it's not really faster at all. Second, it starts at about $28,000 which puts it in a similar price range to not only the GTO and Mustang GT, but also its sister, the Evo! Now come on people, who can really say that they would take an Eclipse over the GTO, Mustang and Evo? Whenever I see someone driving the new Eclipse I just kinda shake my head and think to myself "dude, you got ripped off".
Are they really that expensive?...28K is about what a USED GTO would go for, don't forget new they sticker for 33K. The cobra argument ill save for a GTO thread, but they dont make them anymore so its a bit of a stupid question now isnt it if you want a NEW car.
