56k = 56kilobites per second. refers to how fast your computer transmits on dial-up.

Oh alright got it. I was thinking it had something to do with 56k miles on the car but that made no sense in a lot of situations haha. Thanks a lot guys! Now you can all laugh at me... Lol

I still have dial up. Thank god for smart phones. Mine comp usually dialed up 24kbps. Fastest it has ever dialed was 26.4kbps. I'm not even sure the last time I used it.

K = short for Kilo = Thousand, or x 10^3

56K = 56, 000

For those of you who've never heard of 56K, how old are you?
It's not too long ago that internet connection began speeding up. I can't imagine you guys have never heard of dial-up connection.

I'm right there with ya.... I remember frying my 9600 during a thunderstorm and upgrading to a 14.4, and then whooping some ass on the trivia room of the BBS I got on.

for a good laugh catch the movie Hackers... to hear the tech talk from that time period is hilarious now.

I remember trying to play Unreal Tournament on dial up against my bud, who was cable modem at the time. The **** looked like a ninja - I'd see a flash of him, then I'd be dead. Using a 56k modem on Prodigy, where you would pray to get a connection at 28k.

As far as 14k, I'll show my age a little - I used to dial up on 14k to get onto Usenet to download **** - you would have to download several sections of text, then UUDecode to get the pic. Half the time the decode would fail, and you would have been stuck with 30 minutes of download time and a lot of frustration.....

Then came the sites where you would ftp.....
