In the manual it says that the Cobalt SS takes 5 quarts of oil. This is incorrect, it takes 6 quarts. I changed my oil last night and only put 5 quarts in, then this morning I get a call from my father out at the GM Lordstown Complex and he told me it takes 6. That is just rediculous that GM could make such a big mistake ! Well just thought I would let everyone know so no one else makes the same mistake I did.

Yes, its 6.5 quarts w/filter. Book says 5.0, but then again, book does not specify its for the 2.0. The book was basic, probably referring to the 2.2L. Actually took out almost 7 quarts when emptying from the factory oil. What a huge PAIN to get to the filter in the first place.

Ah, jeeze, this is crazy. My brother works in the GM Tech center in warren michigan, and although he does not work on the Cobalt platform, he does have access to certain files and engineers who do work on this vehicle. He tells me 5 quarts... now I don't know what to do, and I need to change my oil bad. guess I should just try to measure how much comes out of the vehicle.

Heres what you do
call chevy and ask
if you dont want to do that
put 5 quarts in
measure it
if you need more add half a quart
see if it shows up yet if you need more add more
repeat until full and remeber how much you used
thats what i have always done with all fo my cars...

Seriously, where is all of this oil going. How does a 4cyl with a a not so big oil pan take 6qts or more of oil?
* Edit * Well I changed mine today. I guess it has a larger oil pan than I thought it did. I emptied 6qt's out of mine.
I must add that the filter is easy to change but a pain to get at.

Thanks for the heads up on the oil capacity. It was indeed 6.5qts. or 6.15liters of oil.
The filter is a pain for sure, but I faired not too bad with an 1-1/4" socket and two 6" extensions to get the filter cap off...3 elbows in my arm would have been nice, but hey...waddya gonna do.
My manual does say the capacity of the 2.2 ecotec, but not the 2.0 s/c...thanks gm.

yea, when I changed my oil this weekend I was able to fill up 6 quart jugs with the oil that was in my engine. I also think that 6 quarts seems to be the sweet spot for this engine.

You guys are all nuts...changing your own oil with a new car warranty is asking for trouble if you ever had to make a claim with the manufacturer. Just pay someone the $30 to get it done 4 times a year for 5 yrs and forget about it!!!

I don't mean to stereotype, but some of these people working the lube rack aren't exactly rhodes scholars. I have changed my own oil from when I was 16 until I was 25. I went to a Jiffylube, and the guy tells me it looks like the oil has never been changed for the life of the car, because there is an OEM filter on it.
I was speechless.
Now I'm nervous to go to a quick-change place, and usually just take it to a GM dealer.

As long as you save your receipts (which you have to) its still under warranty! Doesn't matter who does it. You don't have to go to the dealer to get your oil changed. If that's what the dealer tells you, then they are wrong.

Its sooooooooo easy to do it yourself. Really. You should learn how. Then you know its correct and not huge messes and its done right! You don't have to re-check work that someone else did.
