Exclamation Another stupid question from me!

Ok so I was reading up on prochargers and lets just say I am a little confused. It sounds like it is a hybrid between a turbo and a supercharger. Is that right? Also they said they have a kit for the Ford Focus. I think its a 2.3L right? Anyways if someone was to buy the kit what type of modifications would be needed? Would it work whatsoever? I can understand needing to bracket it but will it connect with minor modifications?

I only ask this because it sounds as if prochargers are superior to turbos and superchargers. Is this true?

Its a common misconception caused by the appearance of the procharger. It looks like a turbo. It's a kind of supercharger "racism" thing.

Here is the definition of a turbo. It is powered by exhaust gas flow.

A supercharger is powered mechanically by the engine itself.

Now, what the engine powers mechanically doesn't matter, its still a supercharger.

There are different types of forced induction compressor types. The one on the LSJ engine is a roots style. Prochargers are just a different style of compressor that just happen to be the same kind of compressor as a typical turbo.

You are confusing the power source of the compressor, which defines turbo versus super, with the kind of compressor it uses.

There are good things and bad things about centrifugal superchargers. On the plus side, they are much more efficient than superchargers like the roots style found on the SS/SC. A negative is that they do not give good low end power like the roots does; you need to be high in the rpm's in order to get most of the power. That is why this type of supercharger is most often found on muscle cars and the like, because those V8's already have the torque down low. I think that the best options for guys like us in the sport compact world are turbos and roots/twinscrew blowers.
