Base MSRP/Invoice
Base MSRP/Invoice
when finding a new car on chevrolet.com at a specific dealership why is the base msrp/or the options included msrp different than the one the dealer is giving you?
shouldnt all BASE msrp's be the same 19900 (ss s/c)?
i had a dealer tell me that his base msrp was 21,200. after that i specifically told him that he was wrong and told him that i have the correct number from chevrolet.com. he then continued to talk around the subject.
sounds like a dealer trying to f with me...am i right?

base msrp shouldnt include any holdback markup or destination charge...this guy told me like 21400 for base msrp and then went on to tell me something like 20009 as base invoice...he was trying to make more than a buck if you ask me.
and yes i know the 07's are 20400 or something base msrp...but im talking about an 06 sorry for not enough info.
thanks for the response though...

delivery charge is just a way for the dealer to make more money. There was a 4 page article in a car and driver about shady sales people and that is one of the things they said is used to jake up the price.

There is nothing 'shady' about a destination fee...It has been on every car ever purchased. What is shady is the possible $700+ on top of what you get the car at for MSRP. For instance, mine stickered $21,975, I got it to to 21,038, walked out at 23,200 after tax, tag, title and DEALER fees.
Also, invoice is NOT msrp.
i know msrp and invoice is totally different...
base msrp for a ss s/c is 19900 from what i found, and invoice is 18800. I found that % difference in base price and invoice for the car is about 94%... and invoice price for each option on the car is 88% of msrp price.
I was just wondering why the dealer was giving me such a high base msrp for the car i was talking about when i actually knew what it was from chevrolet.com... and once again destination charge isn't factored into base msrp. also the destination charge is a legit charge on a car....i agree
the difference in my numbers and the dealers just didn't make sense to me.

to me thats expensive, mine was bout 24k, left with it at 21,300 (g85/xm/sunroof...)... check out http://www.edmunds.com/new/2007/chev....html?action=1
i went to 4 dealers before i made a deal. i work in the car business designating resolutions for sales presentations through toyota. the plans and all. if you fight the right dealer you will certainly know and not get the runaround. 90% of the dealers that tell you "we will do anything thats possible to get your deal" is complete bs...i have come to see that. lol

thanks, and yeah ive done my research about the car...what it should go for and what edmunds says it should go for...hopefully i can get it for or even below the price listed on edmunds...id be happy with that price...
My car stickered at 24,900 and the employee pricing was 21,530 I believe. I ended up getting mine for 22,400ish. After showing me the invoice, they kind of killed their profits. They also took off the "dealership fees" which I'm thinking were destination charges etc.
Hope fully I can shed some light on the subject. Back Jan 11th GM lowered the Base MSRPs of the Cobalt SS From 21400+590 destination to 19900+590 destination. What GM had done to correct this instead of re-invoicing the vehicles had given the dealers "Dealer cash" to make up the difference from pre-Jan 11th build to post Jan 11th build vehicles. This amout on an SS/SC is 1138. Did the dealer show an 1138 rebate when negotiating?
p.s. Destination is not built in profit for a dealer, it is a GM shipping charge, all dealers pay the same price wheather it's CA or in Lordstown OH.

MSRP is Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. But the truth is that it's a joke. Most dealers jack up the MSRP's on the cars. They figure if they get 1 in 3 people to pay sticker price, it more than makes up for the ones who pay close to invoice. But if they put the actual MSRP on the sticker, then no one will pay more than that. It's all about profit. Some dealers also throw in advertising fees as well, which is bullshit too. All that means is that they want you to pay for the commercials and radio ads they ran.
Then there's the "paint sealant" packages that amount to nothing more than a $500.00-$1000.00 wax job. T
The truth of the matter is that if you're paying invoice for a car, the dealer is still making $ through hold-backs from the manufacturer.
Destination Charge is a valid fee, but it's not one you have to pay for. They will claim that they HAVE to charge you the destination fee, but it's a lie.
To get the absolute best deal on a car you have to negotiate for EVERYTHING. They'll have you believe that a lot of things just aren't negotiable like financing, but it's ALL negotiable.
I knew a guy once that negotiated off what he wanted to pay per month. The dealer gave him what he wanted per month, but after he signed the papers and brought the car home, he showed them to me. I noticed that they tacked on an extra $5000.00 financing charge. So not only did he pay sticker price for the car, but they stuck him for an extra 5,000 on top of that.
It comes down to being smart. The salesmen are trained liars, some of them are so good at it they probably believe what they're saying themselves. Never trust what they say. They've earned their bad reputation, and continue to do so. Salesmen absolutely hate dealing with smart people who have done their research beforehand, and they'll more often than not treat you like crap all the while smiling to your face.
Salesmen are nothing more than con-artists. Every one of them.

JokieMan, Apparently since you are so smart at purchasing vehicles then you would know that the $5000 finance charge is interest owed over the entire term of the loan to the bank correct? How is that the dealer screwing your buddy, sounds to me like he had some crappy credit and financed a vehicle for 72 months at a rate of about 13%. Yes Financing is negotiable to a point, Buy rates are buy rates and right now they are approximately 5.5% if you have excellent credit. As far as Dealers not wanting to deal with smarter educated people you could be more wrong, those are the easy sales. What they don't like to deal with are Asses such as yourself that think they know everything that is going on but couldn't be more wrong.
Got mine at "Supplier Price". The dealing took all of 18 seconds.Asked the sales lady up front,"Cold you give me the supplier price "Out the door?".Got the price, came back the next night and took my red SS/SC off the showroom floor.Hell, they even returned my rental car for me.(My Probe GT Croaked)
I work for a shipping company that is holds GM's second largest contract out of DFW. We deal alot with Wixom assembly especially.
Supplier pricing on the Cobalt SS/SC is pretty decent. It is 980 dollars under MSRP to be exact on a fully loaded model (because the supplier price discounts the options too).
I am happy with the price I am going to pay.
