Best options for adding foglights to SS bumper

Just ordering an SS bumper (w/o lip). Need to get fog lights. Should I go with an OEM kit and wiring? Or is there a good aftermarket solution like better projectors?

For you guys that have added them, let me know what you used, and how you did the wiring.

Thank!

The projectors in the OEM are probably the best for the job.

Unless I'm mistaken the wiring is there wrapped up behind the bumper, but you'll need to get a switch for the dash. Using the OEM stuff should make it pretty plug and play, which would be the easiest route. The parts are not very expensive. I was surprised when I went to replace all of mine.

There is also a how to that was written by.. I think it was c130 pilot on replacing the OEM stuff. You can follow that. I think it even has part numbers.

Even my base model without power option will have the wiring there already?

AFAIK they use pretty much the same harness everywhere to save on costs. I could be wrong, but I was led to believe otherwise. Tell you what, take you 5 minutes to pull a headlight and look in there to see if the wire for the fog was wrapped up in there somewhere.

Ive been in there on mine and i didnt see any extra wiring that wasnt connected to anything..
Couldve missed it tho

hmm ill check this weekend, that would save some headache!

Sox-Fan 12-06-2013 05:52 PM

Bobby, are you LS or LT?

So, I guess maybe you have all the wires you need, and maybe you don't. Guess you have to look.

Slowbalt2000 12-06-2013 06:09 PM

I thought you were saying there was an actual harness for the projectors not just the switch. Ive never checked for that

PsychoCam 12-06-2013 06:37 PM

I have done this on my LT.

I added the ss bumper w/ factory fog lights. I looked all in my front end and I did not have a factory installed oem fog light harness. So then I looked by my steering wheel. I found the factory wiring harness for the fog light button.

So what I did was take put tap "a" fuse in the fuse box under the hood where the fog light spot is located. I ran the wire from the tap "a" fuse done to the fog lights. and made a solid ground. Basically made my own factory looking fog light harness.

Then I had a spare factory fog light button laying around. Plug it in. Turned the car on. Hit the button and boom I had factory working fogs. Then I had gm go in with tech 2 and activate the fog light symbol on my DIC. so now it looks 100% factory.

When my fogs are on, my dash symbol comes on. when I turn my hi beams on. my fogs turn off just like they would if oringally installed the car.

That is the benefit of wiring them in where the fog light fuse is located. That way you don't have constant power to the fogs and have fogs on with hi beams bc that is illegal.

I was in a similar situation several months ago, Base balt, bought SS bumper, and I wanted to add foglights.

If I remember correctly this is what I did and it was pretty straight forward.
Bought a pair of OEM foglight projectors, bought Morimoto HID foglight kit from theretrofitsource (came with harness, bulbs, and ballasts)...

All I did was modify the harness. I clipped the power wire, added a ring terminal to the power wire and placed the ring terminal on the post in the engine fuse box... afterwards I attached the ground wire to a switch so I can toggle when I want my fog lights on and off.

i added the ss bumper and fogs to my 08 ls.
people say some have wiring behind the dimmer switch with the plug in for the factory fog button, mine did not
so i have my fogs tapped to the parking lights so they come on automatically when i turn them on.

wish i could do the factory button and all that tho.

breds2k 12-11-2013 02:32 PM

^ that is illegal in massachusetts so I will have to make a switch.

Cobalt08LS 12-11-2013 02:35 PM

its illegal??

really?
how would one know

jump in a ss and turn the fog lights on and jump in my car and turn the parking lights on and you have the same result.

Got pulled over at 3AM leaving a known problem area years ago (2008).

Officer identifies himself...and asks if its foggy out.....????

Then says you cannot have your fog lights on unless its foggy......WTF? (i had 3000k hid fogs) But color doesn't matter. It does say it in mass law. Now ive run fogs 247 for YEARS. All day, i always have them on no issue, this douche was just searching for a reason to nab me late at night. Passenger was hammered (i wasnt) but he was underage so it was a big mess. got away ok though.

90% of them are not.

Also just get OEM, don't try to rig up something not OEM, because odds are, it's going to look and work like shit.

But if you aren't breaking any laws/vehicle regulations, by all means do it. Just know your mod is completely legal in your city/state. Don't live in fear of uninformed cops who want to play God. Don't stay "OEM" out of fear, if it's legal go for it. Just be knowledgeable and npy ignorant to laws.
