"Breaking In" the engine?

ive always heard you should "break in" the engine on a new car...but what is the best way to go about this? my plan right now is to keep it under 50mph and under 4000RPM for at least the first 1000 miles.

they come pretty much broken in... keeping it under a certain speed doesn't really do anything... what you want to do is drive at DIFFERENT speeds and rpm's... for instance, don't drive across the country at 50mph the whole way... extreme example, but you get the point...

take it easy for 500 miles, and you're good to go...

Break in was alot more neccesary for older cars such as back in the 60's, 70's, and 80's where the piston rings did not come seated from the factory. Most cars today already come with seated piston rings.
Anyway, I've beaten the ever-living **** out of every new car I've had and never had a problem. I usually make sure I find out where the governor is the second I pull it off th lot....lol

The engine is already broken in from the factory...however the clutch is not. Take it easy on that for the first tank or two of gas.

Good advice for me there too. Gonna be spending most of Saturday afternoon refamiliarizing myself with a manual again. Might get myself through a whole tank by then.

When people talk about breaking in the clutch do they mean just taking it easy and not just popping it with a high engine RPM or is there another meathod? I'm pretty inexperienced with drivign a stick, that is to say I have driving 2 older cars with one (an older toyota celica s and a very old Chevy S-10) but I've never actually driven a brand new manual.
