Exclamation Burning Out!!!! Who Knows Their Physics?!?!?!?

OK so after going to court over an "Unsafe Start" Issue a couple months ago, and have wondered and decided to ask the people that know best, the ones driving their cars.
When at a stop, in a Front wheel drive car, if you begin burning out, will the car act as a Rear Wheel Drive car would and begin sliding sideways?!?!
well i personally dont think that happens in Front wheel drive, i know it does in Rear wheel, but according to the police officer and judge that were involved in my case, Front wheel drive cars slide sideways when burning out.

I APPRECIATE ANY FEEDBACK.... THANKS LADYS & GENTS

I think if you have an LSD it can slide sideways.

it can't slide per say, but it can pull in a direction, depending on if one tire is spinning faster...you cant 'fishtail' though when there is nothing to break the rear tires from grip.

If only your front wheels are spinning, then there is no way in hell your rear end could be sliding sideways! Do a burnout infront of a nuetral party and see what they say. IMPOSSIBLE

can what begin to slide sideways. because yes the front can, If both tires are spinning the front is not going to stay still, the car moves forward, but it also moves sideways. my car almost always moves to the passanger side.

go outfront and do a kiler burnout. check what the lines look like, and you will see that the car moved sideways as well as foreward.

All depends on if BOTH front wheels are spinning. Even in a RWD car if only 1 wheel spins it will not make a mark in the letter "J" Only POSI or a locker that allows both rear wheels to recieve = amounts of torque will make the "JJ" burn out marks.

So the answer to your question is it all depends on how the FWD car is equiped.

wrong. if you don't have LSD, generally you're only spinning one wheel (or at least one wheel more than the other), as the torque will flow through the path of least resistance. you can start to pull to one side (usually the passenger side, shorter halfshaft), but you won't 'slide'. your backend can whip around and fishtail, but you'd have to be moving to do that, you can't just spin around in circles while at a stop like you can in a RWD car.

I had to choose it does, but it's really that it CAN. I have had my font end slide to one side when nailing a 4-2 shift @ 40 on a wet road, it actually slid a supprising ammount. This is not to say that it happens every time or is even likely, just that it can happen.

I was about to race this guy a couple years ago in my VW, he had a Jetta. When he launched he spun them and his car came within a hair of hitting mine because he was sliding sideways.

Basically it has a lot to do with torque steer and since you aren't movnig fowards, you're moving to the side.

I doubt our cars are going to be able to move sideways very much. Maybe in reverse? lol

Everybody here has got the right idea. The answer is: IT DEPENDS.

On an open differential, you can spin one tire while the other doesn't turn. So the car will have three tires with traction, and hence keep going straight

On an LSD, if you get both tires spinning, then yes, the car could creep to the side.

On a skid, which is a totally different thing, FWD cars go straight ahead. RWD cars fishtail.

On a level road, you shouldn't slide at all. Obviously if you are losing all of your traction on the front or rear wheels, you will slide if the road is slippery enough.

open diff, it should
on our cars the right tire is the drive tire, so if both wheels are spinning unequally, it will move side to side

do a burnout with your hands off the wheel, and see what direction it goes

It'll move in the front, but not for the same reasons a rear wheel drive will nor as much as a RWD will.

Its similar to driving on snow. I live in the snow belt by cleveland.
When the tires start to spin the car usually will drift to one side or the other, and if the tires continue to spin the car will go in a stright line but even if you turn the wheel, the car will continue to go the same direction.

LSD will help by putting power more evenly to both wheels. This definatly helped in my 2 wheel drive pickup, always launched stright unless I turned the wheel, even though sometimes it just sat there a few seconds.

I know my SRT-4 did when I was in the water box at the track. Could have been caused by uneven pavement. I was nowhere near my old RWD cars but it did move to the right.
